PS3 to become DVR

From the link elwaylite provided:
"Sure, why not, but we're going to need a hell of a lot more than 80GB or 120GB of storage to make that thing useful for HD recordings."
Amen.

What Id like to see is ext hdd support and a add-on hd tuner. Id use it for recording extra OTA programming since the 622 I have will only do 1 at a time.

I know you can swap the HDD in the PS3 easily, but I am not sure one what the largest drive you can put in it is.

Ugh. I'm still waiting for the PS3 to be a game machine with good games. Seems like Sony is trying to make it a media center, not a game machine. Oh well.

Dont worry, we've got Lair, Heavenly Sword, GTA IV, Killzone 2 and Gran Turismo coming between Aug and March.

Yeah, you've got USB 2.0 ports so external hard drives are a viable option, if enabled. I think that for the PS3 target audience DVR functionality adds a lot of value to the unit.

It does for me. I bought it as a media center first, game center second. Its such a great value its not funny. Plus, Sony is committed to improving it via f/w. Most standalones that get a gen or two old will lose that active support.

Sony-Tivo connection:

Hidden TiVo-Sony connection draws no comment - PS3 Fanboy

Ever since we got wind of the digital TV tuner rumor populated by New Zealand's PS3 head marketer, we've been thinking that it was quite possible to turn our PS3's into DVRs. Possible, but according to Sony's own Dave Karraker, not likely. Sony and TiVo signed an agreement way back in 2001, to end in October 2008, that would allow Sony products to sport TiVo software. The agreement hasn't been used all that much, except for the failed PSX.

i put in a 160 GB WD SCORPIO 2.5 inch HD HARDDRIVE SATA SERIAL ATA
WDC HD Western Digital WD1600BEVS 8mbCACHE 5400RPM OEM
so under my ps3 system info screen hdd reads 130/149
so i was able to upgrade 60gb to 130gb after formatting in ps3

Thats pretty good.

Maybe if they enable dvr functions they sell an ext hdd/tuner addon so we can get some more space. The 2.5 drives are limited.

So, if it does more than one thing that's bad in your view? For me, the more things a device can do, all the better, provided it does all those things competently.
I'ld rather it do one thing really well, than a bunch of stuff ok.

And maybe it does. Its plays BR really well. Its ok for games and streaming stuff.

So since streaming video is limited to 2 channels, is the same limit going to be placed on this new DVR functionality? If so, its as useless as the streaming video stuff.
