I found a post on some new developements for the PS3 from the Japanese launch. I was very interested in the comments about the BluRay in the PS3 as a BluRay player. However, I was a little disheartened to see that DVD upconversion is not available yet. They are still working on it. For your reading pleasure:

Same here. It is so stupid to not include DVD upconversion. Hopefully it will be added in the future, and hopefully that idiot from Sony who last week stated that it would upconvert will learn something about speaking when he has no idea what it up.

Looks like Sony was only able to provide 100k units at launch in Japan. Too bad :D

I also find it interesting in yesterdays Best Buy add it stated that they would have minuimum amounts on hand. It said a minuimum of 10 with the cheaper unit and 30 of the more expensive unit. That seems like there pushing the more expensive unit. That may shot themselves in the foot.

Actually, only 88,400. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161589.html?tag=latestnews;title;0

Atleast that is more than the revised 80,000 Sony was estimating.

Looks like GameStop's allocation got sliced as well. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161580.html But the more conservative Toys-R-Us is ok http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161609.html

So, I wonder how many of the 400,000 estimate will actually be available at launch?

Most of the launch product will be the more expensive PS3 with wifi and the larger hard disk. In Japan it was around 62%. US could be closer to 75%. Almost all the 400k is supposed to be available. Remember this is the initial shipment. More shipments will come in before the end of the year.

Essentially the choke point according to Sony is the blue laser diode for the Blu-Ray player. So, may as well sell as many of the more expensive machines as you can since they will be sold out anyways.

Sorry Guys, I was scouting a location for a PS3 grab. I've got two. I am going to buy Resistance (I really like FPS) and a couple of BluRay movies (50gb only). Some of the new titles being released are getting rave reviews. I am really purchasing the PS3 for the BluRay movie playback.

However, I play games and after playing Motorstorm at BestBuy I really want that title. The FUN FACTOR is very high. I also am looking forward to Devil May Cry, Warhawk and a decent platformer -- maybe Rachet and Clank. I will have to visit F-1 Racing as it is very cool -- especially the racing in the rain! There are other titles down the road but I have a feeling that as more 50GB BluRay movies come out I will be investing in those.

Oh yeah, I will have to get Ninja Gaiden for the PS3 as soon as it hits. I like a good hack and slash and it does look very good on the PS3! Man, I am going to go broke -- especially when Halo3 comes out -- I really like that game and I am going to have to break down and get a 360 then. Hope the price goes down by then.:)

ps: I am not as good looking as Hpman247!:D

Shipments cut in half?

I am reading on this site: http://www.neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=36041
and others that Sony's initial shipments may be far less then expected. I also read that less then 100k....closer to 80k were sold in the Japan launch. All I can think is that the blue ray diode is generating the blue spectrum of light.. which is in the outer fringes of the spectrum.. not an easy task at best. My guess is the manufacturing yield on these diodes must be outstanding (BAD) that is. Its taken them a almost a year to manufacture less then 300k of these components. And now Sony is saying by magic they will come out with hundreds of thousands of these PS3's in the last remaining weeks of the year.

The bottom line is Blue ray technology specifications are incredible tight.. very narrow tolerances in comparison to HD DVD. Not only will Sony have to overcome these production issues.. they will also have to make it cheap to produce.. because at some point in the foreseeable future the HD DVD will become very cheap to build and will reflect an aggressive price driven model. Blue Ray on the other hand.. has me wondering if Sony can follow an aggressive price driven model with HD DVD. The bottom line is Sony has to do this. I just don't see Blue ray winning over the masses if it costs twice as much to make in the long run.

The thing I want to know is what are the actual yields on these diodes on the production line? Have they improved on these yields? My guess is the yields have not improved much. And meanwhile Sony keeps telling everyone bogus projections in hopes that the productions issues will magically improve. But the reality is they keep coming up very short. My guess is the yields have never improved and PS3's will continue to trickle out to the public.

Like I've said before. If for some stupid reason you think I post as joe as well, then you can get Scott to prove that it is false. I do not care. WE ARE NOT THE SAME!!

I can connect from ~10 different IPs, all from from different countries, from 4-5 continents.
