Read this please:

This is an e-mail I sent to a friend:

Gregg,
I'm so mad, I couldn't call you on the phone. The schedule I have stands.

Here's why:

Freshmen and Sophomore year, I was hit with a large bronchitis bomb. Out of
school for two weeks due to health-related issues, I exceeded the maximum
absent days allowed by Texas State Law.

If you exceed more than nine days (9) absent, excused or unexcused, then you
lose credit for that semester. You can redeem credit by appealing to a
EPISD school board within thirty (30) days of report cards issued.

We could have done that for the nine Freshmen/Sophomore courses that I lost
credit from...except they never put our new address into the computer when
we moved, even though we requested it.

There was NO reason for Chapin High School to contact me BY telephone or my
parents by PHONE, since the THREE years we've been here our number has
STAYED THE SAME.

Chapin High School/EPISD will send home notices for appeals when students
have exceeded their days. Since they had our old address, mail would have
been returned to the school, which you think would prompt the school to call
us at our phone.

However, when we registered for this year and they had all of my returned
report cards, there were NO notices for appeal, which means Chapin High
School NEVER sent out notices for appeal.

The thirty days is now up. There's no way for me to receive credit. Even
though CHAPIN HIGH SCHOOL STAFF AND FACULTY ADMITS it was THEIR FAULT for ME
NOT GETTING THE APPEAL INFORMATION!!!

Now, I have to take these Freshmen Courses that I've gotten A's and B's for
because my absences exceeded and NO ONE was notified until just today.
There's no way around it.

I GOT the grades for me to get credit. I PASSED WITH A's and B's. But
because the absences exceeded for those two semesters, they aren't going to
grant me credit. They also won't do it because the thirty days were up,
even though NOBODY from the school or the district did their job to let us
know that we can appeal, let alone we've exceeded my absent limit.

Now, I will not have any electives for the remainder of my high school year,
minus the French 2b course.

GET THIS:

If I had not exceeded my absent, but I was stupid and got a 30 or whatever
failing grade, I could have taken a test at the request of my parents--ONE
TEST--and passed to get credit.

MEANING: Stupid kids who come to school can get credit by taking one test.
I work hard after I get sick to get A's and B's and I get screwed because
"excused or unexcused, if the absences count to 9, then you don't get
credit".

Texas legislation has screwed me out of electives. In order to graduate in
2005, I will have to lose electives, keep the schedule I have now (I do
qualify as a Junior, mind you). Next year, I have to take courses online,
night school, before and after school classes, summer school, and EIGHT
ADDITIONAL COURSES in order to graduate in 2005 with my class. If I fail
one class, I'm screwed.

The school has ADMITTED this is the fault of CHAPIN HIGH SCHOOL. They,
however, cannot seem to come up with a plan to rectify the situation. I'm
screwed either way.

SO...

I will be taking those classes. I will also be writing letters to the
editor of the El Paso Times, Chapin Chronicle, USA Today, Las Cruces
Chronicle, Albuquerque Journal, Sacramento Bee. I will also be sending
letters to CNN's Education Department, KVIA Channel 07's Education First
department and ABC 7 Listens, KTSM Channel 09's Nick Miller (since I've met
him), KDBC Channel 04 (they run out of UTEP), KFOX 14 (education
department), KXTV 10 Sacramento (I have connections there) and KTVU Channel
02 (they run all FOX syndicates for the west coast). ALSO, I WILL BE
WRITING TO TIME WARNER PUBLIC ACCESS 15, FORT BLISS MONITOR, AUSTIN HIGH
SCHOOL'S NEWSPAPER, IRVIN HIGH SCHOOL'S NEWSPAPER, AND ANDRESS HIGH SCHOOL'S
NEWSPAPER, LONG TIME RIVALS OF CHAPIN, AS WELL AS THE TEXAS CABLE NETWORK
(TxCN)

I will also be launching a website and writing to my state legislateur, as
well as long-time friend of Chapin Senator Chapley, Mayor Joseph Wardy,
State Governor Richard Perry, and New Mexico Senator (my grandmother was a
senator from New Mexico).

I WILL NOT GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT...THIS WILL GET THE ATTENTION OF THE
PUBLIC!! I WILL DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO MAKE SURE THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN TO ANY
OTHER STUDENT AT CHAPIN HIGH SCHOOL OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.

If you'd like to help, please pass this message along to those in your
address book.

Cheers and Regards,
Matthew
