I bought a Panasonic 42px77u just 2 weeks ago. I have a Dish Network PVR510 receiver and a Yamaha AV system along with your run-of-the-mill 5yr old DVD player. The sat box is connected to the AV receiver via composite inputs. Same with the DVD player. The AV receiver is then connected to the 77u "Video 1" input. Here is the problem:

While watching Dish, I get about a 1/4-1/2" black vertical bar on the right side of the screen. This happens on about 90% of the channels. It seems like the picture is left-justified for some reason. I tried switching the video inputs but the problem persists on ALL of them.

Here is kicker #1: This problem is not apparent when I connect my 26" Sharp Aquos LCD to the sat box.

Kicker #2: The display is just fine while playing DVDs.

Kicker #3: I borrowed my neighbor's PVR510 sat box to see if maybe there was something wrong with mine. I hooked it up and the same black vertical bar is present!

Kicker #4: I returned the TV to the store, exchanged it for a new one and I STILL get the vertical bar!

So now I'm extremely confused. Anyone have any suggestions? The black bar is slowly but surely starting to burn in

When you switched inputs did you try bypassing the connection to your a/v receiver (run the connection straight from your PVR510 to your t.v.)?

Yes I tried that. Using both S-Video and composite. Same result unfortunately. I'm beginning to think the 510 line of receivers is the problem.:(

Ugh! That's frustrating! The only thing I would do in that circumstance would be (just for the sake of trying another one) to call E* tech support and maybe trying a 3rd receiver. If that doesn't work, maybe upgrading to another receiver like the 625 (SD) or 622/722 (HD). Sounds like with your Panasonic Plasma you may want to take advantage of the HD picture. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Welcome to SatelliteGuys.US, Jack. :)

I definitely can see that being an irritating (and damaging - with burnin) problem. :(

I wonder if maybe the Aquos does a better auto-adjustment, or possibly the Panasonic shows more of the overscan than the Aquos. One test you can try is to view the guide screen from the 510 on each TV and see how far the right edge of the guide is from the right edge of the viewable screen.

Also, I guess I should ask, is the black area there while looking at the guide and other full screen on-screen displays, or is it just there when watching TV?

(and for future reference, you can add smileys via their symbolic text keywords rather than via image references) :)

Panasonics actually have pretty decent scalers in them. When you bypassed using s-vid and composite.... did you also try running component direct from sat box to the Panny?

I've had many professional installers tell me (and I now follow this advice) that if your TV has the video inputs, let the TV do the video switching and let the AV handle sound. That's how I have my 42" panasonic plasma set up (I have the model that yours replaced! :) )
Video from sat box to TV. Sound from sat box to Sony AV receiver. Take a look at the setup screens in your panasonic and put the aspect on "normal". See what you get. If you do not have HD to fill that screen, then I might suggest you use "just" as the aspect for a few weeks. That stretches the edges more than the middle so people and objects in center screen aren't distorted (as much).

The 510 doesn't have component outputs.

But aside from that, I agree with the input switching advice. If your TV has the appropriate inputs (and enough of the right ones), and correspondingly you have an A/V receiver with the right inputs, then that is the way to go. I've maxed out all of my TV's inputs, and all of my A/V receiver's digital audio inputs... and maxed out a 4-to-1 optical selector switch feeding the A/V receiver, with still some optical sources not connected. :D

Does the TV have any settings to crop the picture any? My Olevia LCD allows me to crop up to 20 or 30 pixels all around, as well as manually adjusting the horizontal and vertical alignment...

There should be overscan adjustment in the service menu of the Panny plasma...although you may not want to go into that menu. Not knowing what you're doing in there can really screw things up.

There should be an authorized tech or something in your area that can go into the service menu and adjust the picture. Guys that do ISF calibration will be able to do this.

You are also putting an SD signal into an HD set. So you aren't going to get a full screen picture without stretching the image. Did you try adjusting the tv's different stretch modes? I am not sure about your set but maybe there is a stretch mode that does what you are seeing.

I've noticed the 14px or so right side back bar on my DVD Recorder DVDr recordings via s-video from the PR510 when viewed on the computer and with the VIP622 has the same except it is 8px right side and 8px left side black bar. Its like there is a 704px image in a 720px frame.

My RPTV has 5% over scan so I never see thoes black bars, personally I would perfer no overscan.

If DVDs are fine and it's only the satellite receiver exhibiting this behavior... . I have the Panny plasma as well. And I ran mine on s-video while waiting for my HD upgrade. It didn't have this issue on any device. I didn't have the same model receiver though so ..... can't speak to that part.

DVDs work fine AND he doesn't see this on ALL of the channels from the 510. So this would seem... to me at least... to be pointing at the 510 as the culprit. Why the Panny isn't compensating, I don't know.

aeroseek.... along with that new plasma you should have received a pamphlet for Panasonic Concierge service. Call them. This could be a simple setting change.

Sorry...missed the part about it not happening on every channel.

Different sources can put out slightly different picture widths, so that may have been a contributor, but saying it doesn't happen on every channel, I'm not sure.

yeah but it's odd that he's only getting that bar on the right side. Normally when you get odd picture size. it's still centered. You get bars on both sides. I've never seen it just on one side.

Plain & simple

Upgrade to either a 622 or 722. You have an HDTV setup it's time to lose the SD equipment so you can see what your set's can do. The 510 is no longer what you need. Dish'n'up time.

Wow! Thanks everyone for the support!

They are the same on both TVs. The screens are filled.

Also, I guess I should ask, is the black area there while looking at the guide and other full screen on-screen displays, or is it just there when watching TV?

Nope. No black bar while viewing guides.

I called Panasonic today and they were intrigued enough that they're sending out a tech on Tuesday. TV is still under warranty so I don't think it will cost me anything. Although I should have asked:p In the mean time I have another friend with the same 510 sat box. I will try connecting his also and see.
