I picked up a traxis 3500 the other day and had a couple questions and comments. I know it isn't a new box or anything, been reviewed a couple times, but for the price and quality, I had to have one at least for peaking the dish.

First of all, wow, this unit has a very nice blindscan. Very sensitive, yet very fast and PQ is very good.

What makes this units blindscan so much better than most other boxes? I can't believe it is some super technology, especially based on the price of the unit.

One problem I had with serial communications (had to get newest file for new sat names etc) is it only seems to work if plugged into com1. Anyone else experience this?

i've yet to hook my serial cable up yet ( have to get a null cable) but i find the channel editor very basic. if it wasn't for them puting out a updated satellite list with double satellites i wouldn't know how to add one.

it is fast on scans i still have to goto a AC-3 channel i suspect it still has problems there , but will have to check.

No one has reported the AC3 problem fixed.
So, if it has been, it's a state secret.

I always mention that AC3 shortcoming when I recommend it as the cheapest blind-scanner.

Anole:

I bought a Traxis DBS 3500 on your recommendation. Irrespective of the AC 3 problem (no sound), its a great blind scanner!

And, it really augments my Coolsat 8000 hd (which does not have the blind scan, but has component output, HD capability etc). i have found channels (particularly backhauls) that I could not find on the charts.

I thanked you before, I thank you again.

Hey, don't let that get around! :)

I just pointed it out - you made the decision.
Glad you're happy with it.
I don't have one, myself.
I just read the forum a lot and looked under rocks 'till I found it cheap.

well i'm running the traxis 100% now , mentioned in another thread both my coolsats have failed within a year. one is back to the factory now , the second one requires a original receipt from a certified resaler ( i'm the second owner) so its dust.. they have a 5 year warranty now but no way to track it and require a authorized saler receipt to get the waranty work done. everything about the coolsat 5000 was good until the failure (well it had a minor remote eye sensor problem) so the durability of the units is in question. of course these are the ones i carried indoors and outdoors doing tuning.

so i have these
satpro500 - good basic unit with no blindscan
coolsat 5000-easy menu , ac-3 works, possible eye sensor problems & durability problems
traxis 3500 - fast blind scan ac-3 doesn't work awaiting filmware fix, basic channel editor

How do you get sound then? Is the digital audio output completely dead? What's the scoop with PBS audio. I read somewhere that they were AC-3 only. Does that mean that the Traxxis 3500 won't work with PBS?

Not unless you lip-read.

Here's the last word I heard on the subject, and since nothing has happened since then, I hold out no hope for a fix.
So, if AC3 is important, don't buy it.
If you don't care about AC3 (and many use 'em for their blind-scan ability only), then it's a cheap choice.

Darned shame, too.
The 3500 sounds like pretty much the equal of many current FTA boxes.
And a whole lot better than the POS hacker-bait boxes on the market.

I just got an email back from Tim at DMSI.

He said that the solution was not ready yet, but the engineers were working on it.

The reason he gave for the delay is that the processor he chose for the Traxis is much faster and hack proof, but less developed software wise.

Those of us interested who want AC-3 output will just have to wait a while.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I got another email from Tim at DMSI.

He said that he had given the engineers an incentive today to push the AC-3 problem in the Traxis DBS-3500 to a solution soon. :D

Gabsphere, you said you are running the Traxis 100% now. Does that mean you have no use for the other two? Are you interested in selling either/both? I might be interested. Email me? rayno3@copper.net

Thanks.

Ray

rayno3,
