Hi,

I'm getting my D* dish installed in a few weeks and I got an OTA antenna through them. Does anybody know what kind of antenna will that be? Anybody with a pic of it?

According to antennaweb.org my stations are between 16.9-19.0 miles away; compass orientation 163-169 so I shouldn't have need a really powerful antenna to get them, right?

Thanks!

If that antenna is what they send and its free go ahead and take it but put up another. If you paid extra for it, call back and have it removed and try the Zenith Silver Sensor for $22; if that doesn't work or you want something non-indoor look at these.

If you are UHF reception only:
Winegard HD 9085P
Antennas Direct 43XG
Winegard PR 9022
Channel Master CM 4308

If you are VHF/UHF combo:
Winegard PR 7010
Antennas Direct V21
Winegard HD7080P
Channel Master CM 3677
Channel Master CM 3016
Channel Master CM 5646

Thanks for the reply guys!! I don't know what I am getting from them. I guess I could call back and ask. And yes, I'm getting it for free (part of the moving deal). So, if that's the one they're bring you don't think it would work for my area?

If its free you can try it, but those "batwings" and "circular" types are mostly hype and only good VERY close. I think you would be more satisfied with a better quality antenna.

They sent me the Winegard Sensar II last year. Its sitting in the garage right now as I picked up a DB2 antenna, which works great. I'm about the same distance as you from the towers.

Thanks! Did you just replace the one you got from D* up on the roof or do you use it indoors?

FG, I agree with charper. Start cheap, and with something you can return and work your way up! At your distance and depending on terrain and anything else in the way, you might be surprised!---Ray

Yep, I agree. I have the feeling though that I should be OK with the one D* will bring. I think the Sacramento stations transmit their signal at full power, so even with an indoor antenna I may be able to get it. My other limitation is that it's a rental so I can't really anything too big up there. I'm already limited to not being able to put it on the roof as they'll be replacing it in a couple of months. But, if it all doesn't work out in the end, I still have comcast available in my area. that's the advantage of living in a good size city: you have choices!!

I have used the linked antenna in my post above for well over 2 years at 28 miles from towers with absolutely no issues with reception. I have mine in my attic. The antenna is definitely not for something only VERY close as Charper mentioned.

I replaced the one D* sent. I went with DB2 from Antenna's Direct and mounted it outside. Originally, I had it on the roof on the mount where the tech had put the Winegard Sensar II (batwing), but I had some multipath issues with a local station. So, I took it down and mounted it on the side of my deck (about chest height). Works great right there.

thanks everyone again! Keeping my fingers crossed that it will work fine and I won't have to fool around with it. As I said before I think all stations transmit at full power and the towers are almost in the same orientation so once I get a lock in one the other should come up fine.:) I'm a little concerned though as there are a few trees behind my backyard so I'm not sure if D* will actually be able to get a sat lock!

Directv OTa antenna

The antenna that directv provides is the winegard sensar, make sure to get the amplified one, it works pretty well actually on uhf. I have been installing these and get staions from 50 miles plus on a ranch house.

So if I am 17mi or less from each of the towers in my area, and on relatively flat terrain [no tall buildings and very low rolling topography] is there a chance this wingard works? The tower are all in approximately the same direction as well [maybe 100 degrees across them].

Cool! Thanks. I wonder if I can find out which one I get by calling them? worth a shot!

Not only that winegard but the recommended zenith silver sensor, as long as you don't need vhf also.

I use an old amplified Winegard Sensar with my H10. It worked great on analog, and works great on digital. It did have some multipath problems, until I moved it around a little. I can now get every DTV channel in my area; that's about 19 in all.

I have one network in VHF...which throws the preverbial monkey wrench in the works.

Has anyone seen a review of the Megawave antenna that TitanTV recommends for close proximity applications?
