On the D12-100 model receiver is there a menu or status screen of some sort that tells you weather you are connected to a wireless jack or phone line in general.
 
yes, go to menu/setup/settings/info & test. then press the up arrow, then the right arrow. this will test the phone connection among other things.
 
arrrgh my phone line connection portion of the test failed. I have everything plugged in right but something is not right about the indicator lights. its a wireless phone jack.
 
Have you tried using a wired connection to the unit, then run the test, at least you can eliminate that as the problem, since if it works wired, you know it's a wireless jack issue (not a D* issue), if it fails, it's a defective unit, in that case, D* should replace it free (if leased or covered by their plan).
