Spent some time today looking at an LG 3D front projector on a special concave cylindrical screen made by Vutec. I recall the rep said it was a 12 gain screen system selling for $6000. The LG PJ sells for $15000. While the concave screen is not required, it allows for a constant quality image for a wide sweet spot as opposed to a flat screen or white wall which has a narrow sweetspot.
Even this $21000 system had poor contrast, but better resolution than the passive panels. The projected 3D images looked almost translucent, like the glasses free images. The lady demoing this system said it was not well built for cinema but rather animations for industrial use. Her company does 3D video production work for industry and the government. So this system is built for showing off concepts in design to a group of people. They consider this the best current technology has to offer in passive front projection.
