Packet-Tel, a Canadian telecommunications common carrier, has launched affordable high-speed (DSL) Internet access and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service for residential and small business markets in smaller communities across Ontario.
According to an October 2005 CRTC report, at the end of 2004, 98 per cent of urban households had access to broadband service versus 68 percent of rural households, the company cited. Outlying areas in the 'last mile' have long been looking for Internet and data connectivity solutions.
"Customers in major urban areas like Toronto have long benefited from the Rolls Royce of Internet service, with multiple options for high-speed connectivity and less-expensive, Internet-based voice services," said Jennifer Evans, Corporate Spokesperson, Packet-Tel. "We started our company in response to a need for basic telecom capabilities in areas that established telephone companies were challenged to serve and have spent the last 10 years providing this service to school boards, municipalities, industries and hospitals. Now we're delighted to offer the same quality of service and high-speed access to customers in small to medium markets - places like Elora and Strathroy to Mattawa, Parry Sound and Tillsonburg. Our goal is to help residents and small businesses in these parts of Ontario traverse the last mile, simply and cost-effectively."
"Packet-Tel was instrumental in implementing a robust wireless network, using the various technologies available to us, to create exactly the solution we needed," said Michael Hobin, Network Specialist, County of Brant. "Because of the nature of our business, we deal with extremely large and critical files. Packet-Tel was very sensitive to our requirements and the needs of the various municipal offices and libraries. They provided us with excellent customer service and record uptime."
Packet-Tel's current installed network of infrastructure across Ontario consists of fibre, wireline and wireless towers, equaling the distance from Windsor to Ottawa four times over. This footprint has allowed them to help, for example, a number of school boards consolidate disparate schools over a wide range of geographies and state of Internet readiness. Says Mike Morgan of the Bluewater School Board:
"I had to find a way to integrate the 56 schools in our board into one network, which given the range of networks, coverage and technology, was an incredible challenge. Packet-Tel came in and completely solved our problem. They customized a solution for us on time and on budget that has all of our buildings connected. The benefits have been amazing. Our WAN-related support calls have been reduced, allowing me to re-deploy that senior resource to much more proactive projects. As well, because Packet-Tel was able to work with the technology we had available to us, we were able to save a considerable amount of money. They liaised with all the various telcos to bring the LAN together and we couldn't be more pleased with how it works."
