P401 Software 508DVR problems

My original (5-yr old) 508 was locking up while watching recorded programs, so DishNetwork sent me a new receiver. Not only did it do the same thing, it had a new(?) software, P401, which gives me a different Menu and different choices when I select a program to record (all, new, etc.). They sent me another 508, which behaves fine while watching recorded programs, but has the P401 software. I may be an idiot, but shouldn't it record all programs with a matching title if I select "record all"? It doesn't record anything if I select "all" or "new". I talked through it with tech support at DishNetwork during two separate phone calls and was told to "reset the receiver". You know, the old "hold the power button" trick. Anyone have any other advice?
