I recently received an e-mail with an attachment in winmail.dat format, but I can't open it. So far, I have tried this winmail.dat reader: Winmaildat.com: Open winmail.dat attachments. , as well as this downloadable reader: Download - Winmail.dat Reader - Free winmail.dat converter to open files sent by Outlook and Outlook Express
I think I had previously corrupted my Registry by once trying to open a similarly formatted winmail.doc attachment using Word Perfect. I think that I might have selected "Always use this program to open this format" when I tried to open one previously. I think I had already corrupted my Microsoft operating system by linking .dat files to Word Perfect in the Registry and I don't know how to unlink them, so as soon as I even try to open the winmail.dat attachment, I am hi-jacked and taken to Word Perfect.
When I try to enter what I think is my Registry by clicking the "regedit" icon, I get this message:"Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator". And when I click reglocs.old, it says "To open this program, windows needs to know what program created it"
In the short run, I just need someone to open the attachment, which is just a short inventory list, and paste it into an e-mail and send it back to me, but in the long run, I really do need to get into the registry and correct this "open file" error and another similar one. Any suggestions. I think my computer uses Windows XP.
