So for fun I went to some of the members "favorite" website ;) only to see its up for sale

Yup...freedbs.org is up for sale!!
(oh shoot...now I have to ban myself for 3 days...that was the running gag for the last 2 years...you mention freedbs and you got banned for 3 days. Not really but it was a gag we said)

For the new members who might be confused, FreeDBS (or as some of us call it FreeBS) was this company who 3 years ago said they were going to create this 20 channel KU package that was going to be free. Well from the getgo there was something fishy about it. Lots of talk but never any updates. Then like 6 months later they'd create an update. The only thing they did was say at the time it would be between 80-100 degrees for the satellite. They really touted the Manhattan as the receiver of choice.
Originally they said there were "20 million" FTA recievers being used in the US...later that year they tuned it down to "1 to 2 million". Some of the channels they "thought" they were going to put up were the Networks from Louisville (they apparently were based near there), NASA and a "free sports channel" that would carry sporting events. A couple months later all those except for NASA was removed form the list and became more of just knockoff channels of existing types (you see stuff like that on Roku now)

Last update was a year ago that "they are still working on it. The wheels move slowly"...well I think those wheels are froze solid and wont move ;)
In a nutshell it was a pipe dream and sadly they became the laughingstock of FTA

Here is the original thread from 3 years ago.

and if you get bored and want to read more here is the archive for that site

I had forgotten all about that! As I was reading your post, Ice, I was racking my brain trying to figure out where the heck you were coming from and going to with this and then it all came back to my mind!
It was a pleasurable notion, but after I investigated the expense of doing something similar, I realized that it was a pipe dream. Sounds really fun and exciting in the concept, but in reality it is unfeasible. Unless you have so much money that you can afford to just toss it away for amusement or you truly have a niche that can make it all pay.

I would buy it and forward the domain here, but then people would think we were behind the hoax.

It wasn't a bad idea just no one seemed to have any background with running a single TV station much less 20+ stations.

I'm surprised the site stayed up this long.

Shame... Do you think it was something that went the way of xstreamhd or just a running joke?

Hard to say. They might have had good intentions, but just bit off more than they could chew. Once they found out what sort of overhead they'd be stuck with, it probably died right then. They just didn't know it yet and kept on hoping for the best.

Either way, xtgold is right.

Well I guess that's the last we'll hear about freed BS.
nah. In a week or so someone will post a thread "hey what happened to the freebs website?" (kinda like when folks would post "hey did anyone hear about this company called freedbs?" :)

both. Primestar mentions alot of it that they had good intentions but then when they started being questioned on things (the whole 20 million FTA receivers was the 1st thing) it went downhill from there. The last 2 years they've been a running joke.

Check out the links I posted above. The 1st one is the original thread. The 2nd one (the archive) you can see some of the website updates.

Ya like the one you locked that I wrote. Remember we are all newbies at some point.

Yeah, I don't know if this involves anybody from FREE D-BS, but take it for what it's worth:

http://nafreeview.com/

I ran a "whois" on them, and everything is masked beyond that they are hosted by Godaddy. I wouldn't recommend anybody donate money to them through that Paypal link. Even if they are quasi-legit, you know how it'll most likely shake out.

mmm.... these guys already have the schedule for the first hour of programming:

"For our inaugural broadcast, we have secured the rights to broadcast, exclusively to our community, "Media Malpractice, How Obama Got Elected and Palin Was Targeted". Many Thanks to John Ziegler."

What happened to the other service that was supposed to come out with 20 channels that was supposed to be legit?

This entire thread is about that "other service" (Freedbs) who just had their website expire, and you ask that question? Did you read any of the posts? How about reading the second sentence in Ice's very first #1 post here? Then read the entire rest of his post.

They never were viable, and never did a single thing beyond having that website.

Looks like there's a new update posted on nafreeview.com with their scrolling banner on the main page as follows:

There will not be anything to announce until after I get my taxes finished, at the earliest. Again, please do not donate until after we have started broadasting. Thank you!

EDIT: Oh and it looks like the freedbs.org website is back online as a WordPress blog and it has a message "We are not going away!"

:D
