I post this for the enjoyment of hockey/SLAP SHOT fans.

Bob Costas talked about this guy during the first intermission of the Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

Bill "Goldie" Goldthorpe

Bill "Goldie" Goldthorpe (b. June 20, 1953 in Hornepayne, Ontario) was a professional ice hockey left winger who played for 16 minor league teams between 1973 to 1984, playing exhibition games with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins. He played in three games for the Minnesota Fighting Saints* during the 1974 WHA playoffs, scoring no points and 25 penalty minutes. Goldthorpe, who grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, is widely regarded as one of the most infamous hockey enforcers to have ever played the game, a man once dubbed the "wildest, meanest, most unpredictable player in hockey, earning an amazing 1,132 penalty minutes in 194 professional games. He was the inspiration for the character Ogie Oglithorpe in the 1977 film Slap Shot.

*Jack Carlson of the Minnesota Fighting Saints, brother of Jeff and Steve Carlson who portrayed two thirds of the Hanson Brothers was to have been in the movie, but WHA commitments prevented him from doing so. Dave Hanson replaced him and they became the Hansons. Dave Hanson's son, Christian plays hockey for Notre Dame.

I think one of the "Hanson" brothers actually played with the Red Wings for a short period. I need to double-check that though.

Paul,

Two of the Hanson Brothers real names are Carlson.

This is posted on the Internet Movie DataBase:

Brothers Jack, Jeff Carlson and Steve Carlson were originally slated to play the Hanson brothers. However, Jack was called up by the Edmonton Oilers shortly before filming began. His part went to another member of the Johnstown Jets, David Hanson, who was supposed to play Dave "Killer" Carlson. Actor Jerry Houser was hired for that part.

I had read this yeas ago, but couldn't rmemeber where.

Every year since this movie came out on tape, and now disc, about a week before hockey season starts I watch it to get into the hockey mode.
