Hi,

We just started using solidworks at work and the computer I have is a little outdated. The processor is great but the ram and video card are lacking. I am going to upgrade the ram to 2gb or 4gb.

I dont know if anyone has any experience with solidworks, but apparently it works well with nvidia video cards, so i guess that is the route im going.

The question is, what is a good somewhat cheap Nvidia video card I can buy. I say I want it cheap because I dont want to spend so much on ram and a video card that it makes it not worth just buying a new computer.

I also dont want to get too cheap, I see lots of cards in the 50-100 dollar range and then some more in the 150-250 range. I can see slight differences in the ones I am looking at, but not a lot. So I guess I dont really know exactly what too look for. I assume I want at least 256mb ram, but what do I know. Thats why I am asking here.

If anyone has any suggestions on this topic it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yeah some of my users use SolidWorks so what I would do is on Solidworks web site they have a list of Nvidia Cards they have tested. So just looks at the cards they have tested and get the one that fits in your budget the best..

Here the link where you can choose the type of Video Card you want and it shows what cards they support and their drivers as well.. Anyone using SolidWorks should refer to this page if you have any concerns with certain video cards.

I have already been to their website and I looked up a few of those cards and most are 128 mb cards from what I looked at. The problem for me is there are so many cards out there and many of them are in the same price range. I guess I was looking for someone to tell me which nvidia cards are better than others maybe for the $50-100 range and the $100-200 range. Its so overwhelming looking at all the cards on the market today. If anyone had a few suggestions of particular cards that would be great.

Thanks again

Ok what version of SolidWorks are you using? What OS is your machine running..

Nvidia Cards

For a great mid range card I suggest the 9600GT.

On Newegg it sells for $165.

For a little better card which offers better price/perf but costs more i suggest the 9800GTX or 9800GTX+ which costs $200 in newegg.

This card is pretty much already in the high end.
