Does anyone know if Directv has any good deals on the Nomad equipment? We had our service installed on the 3rd and I didn't even think to ask about it. We have the HR34 Genie setup at our house.

I've never heard of them giving a deal on the Nomad beyond the $150.

You may be able to get a small programming credit, but probably nothing beyond what you could have gotten for any other request.

As a side note, received word this week that they are adding in-home streaming to the nomad software for iphone / PC. If I understood right basically stream from the receiver without converting / downloading to the nomad - but in-home only.

In the same mention, still no software for Android or native iPad in sight. Seems to me that Directv is focussed on the wrong things in their Nomad software team - support the devices you said you would support a year plus ago before worrying about adding features to existing software.

Well that was quick, the Nomad page is updated this morning with the new info on streaming:

The iphone app update is available:
NEW IN THIS VERSION
- Now you can stream movies and shows from your HD DVR instantly anywhere within the home (you must be within your home Wi-Fi network). Just click “Watch Now” on any program in your Playlist to stream, or select “Download” to take the program within you anywhere and everywhere you go.
- Set a live program to record on your HD DVR and start watching the program on your iPhone as it starts to record.
- This version also allows you to start streaming a program on your iPhone and continue where you left off on another iPhone.
- Closed captioning support for downloaded and streamed shows
- Optimized for iPhone 5
- Optimized for iOS 6
- Stability enhancement

Will the Nomad allow live streaming outside the home as well, ala Sling?

Heck no. The Nomad is a pretty weak device especially for the price that DirecTV charges for it. I keep waiting for it to blossom into something more attractive then what it currently functions as but that doesn't look like it's going to happen any time in the near future. It seems as though DirecTV is mostly fearful of stepping on the feet of it's content owners.

Ugh. It would be nice if they did allow it to stream outside the home like the Sling. That is one thing DISH has a good market over. I think some of the cable companies are even starting to look at streaming outside the home as well.

The in home streaming works really well.. I downloaded the update and played with it this morning..
For out of home, you still have to download the show to whichever device your using (iPhone, etc...)

Neutron - the main benefit of the Nomad is it converts video from the HD DVR to the storage in the Nomad, then it lets you download to an iPhone etc and watch anywhere. Key benefit being no cellular data usage and able to use it anywhere, such as an airplane.

I'm sure if DirecTV wanted to do it they could make a place-shifting streaming solution, whether via Nomad or something else. Directv seems to be much more focussed on keeping content companies pleased, the exact opposite stance of Dish, who seems to enjoy lawsuits with any company they do business with.

I'm thinking of getting a Nomad but was told that I can only transfer content from premium channels such as HBO and Showtime once and that it would be deleted from my DVR. Is this true? If so I can't see the value in the Nomad.

Not true, the content from premium channels stays on the HD DVR, is never deleted by nomad. You're thinking of the Dish Hopper with Sling, not nomad.
