NFL Thursday Night Football in 4k looks bland

I for one am happy with the 4K picture. It is not leaps and bounds better than my local FOX affiliate or NFL Network but I do see a difference.

Also, I am glad it is not 4K HDR because my Samsung in the Media room is only compatible with the 4K feeds.

Dish is stripping the HDR data from their rebroadcast of the 4K feed which results in colors not looking right. Not sure why they’re doing that unless they think having it available to watch on the 4K joey is more important than having a correct looking picture.

Why wouldn't they they just offer it both ways? With HDR and without?

One of those great mysteries of why Dish does anything they do.

Were it an issue of bandwidth, that’s your answer, but I’m fairly certainly they have that available. So your guess is as good as mine.

If I were hired into operations management, I would go into the office tomorrow and immediately cease all duplicate SD feeds and reallocate that bandwidth.

I don't know who else could figure out how to make a 65" television a 47" television. (See photo)

Dish may think they are catering to those with old school 4/3 tv sets, but any of those users left either:
1) Don't take care about the picture anyway
2) Are very unlikely to be your customer base in the next few years

However, DISH is senselessly detracting from the experience for over 90 percent of its customers.

If it ISN'T about catering to those with 4/3 tv's and it's about bandwidth:
1) Shut down SD duplicates
2) Downconvert if you have to, but please fill the whole screen with content

Upconverted 4K feed you have to use the Fox Sports app. Amazon is just 1080p

It doesn’t matter as it should only be one feed with HDR. Non HDR sets ignores the metadata and displays only in SDR even though its an HDR signal.

I had a similar opinion regarding HDR on non HDR Televisions. However, If non HDR sets just ignore the metadata and still display the 4K picture as SDR why did Dish customers with non HDR sets complain that they could not watch the Olympics when Dish broadcasted the Olympics in 4K HDR?

Probably because Dish wasn’t doing it right. Notice it was only dish customers who complained. DirectTV doesn’t have this issue and their channels are in HDR. I have multiple 4K sets in my home. Two in HDR and one not. The one that doesn’t have HDR still tunes in, just in SDR. Dish is the only provider that has those complaints where as Comcast and Direct doesn’t.

I found an article that discussed converting HDR broadcasts to SDR. This probably explains why the Dish 4K football has washed out colors unless you change the color space from Auto to BT.2020 on your TV.

Since version 3.13, there is no need to manipulate anything to have an automatic conversion HDR to SDR. New conversion works on the luminance curve and the chrominance. A 3D LUT is dynamically applied to convert BT.2020 to BT.709.

To have an optimal conversion, here are the settings that we advise :
Deep Color: 10 Bits
Color Space: Y'CbCr 4:4:4
