NFL 2022

Can't they just make a decision?! Scratch the Bengals v BIlls game. Not fair? What wouldn't be fair is to cascade the impact of not completing the game across more teams. If New England actually beats the Bills and their game was delayed, they have to play multiple games in a short span, just like Buffalo.

Just scratch the game, Pats play Bills as scheduled and that's that.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. IMO, the NFL is doing the best they can in a situation that is unprecedented in league history. They are taking everything one step at a time, and that includes the potential to makeup/resume the Bills-Bengals game. The Bills players watched their teammate nearly die on the field. In a game as violent as football, that has to have taken an incredible emotional and mental toll on the players. Kudos to the NFL for doing the right thing. I only hope that it continues.

It's not completely unprecedented. Kevin Everitt broke his neck on the Kickoff when Buffalo hosted Denver in the Season opener about 10 years ago. They saved his life on the field. The game went on. Hamlin has started to show improvement. Feelings aside, this is what they get paid the do. This is the risk they knowingly take. Say prayers, find motivation, whatever, but it's time to get on with the business of Football.

In 1920 Ray Chapman was killed on the field when he got hit by a pitch. NHL Player Bill Masterson dies within hours of an on-ice hit in 1968 that split his head open when he hit the ice.

It's not unprecedented. Life goes on. The world keeps turning.

Okay maybe “unprecedented” was the wrong term in the literal sense, but the NFL is taking it’s cue’s from the Bills organization and what they went through the other night. If they’re not ready to get back on the field, who is anyone that is outside their group to say they’re wrong? In the big picture, you are absolutely correct- life does indeed go on. I just applaud the NFL for letting them deal with what they went through on their own time table. Mental and emotional health is nothing that should be taken lightly.

The NFL is trying to have it both ways. Which is typical. They will wait until the games this week are played. If the Bengals win Sunday, then the MNF result is irrelevant to Baltimore's position. If the Patriots win Sunday, then the same for the Bills. That is what the NFL wants to have happen.

One proposal I have seen is that if game is not played and Kansas City and Buffalo each end up with 3 losses the AFC championship would be played in Indianapolis.

I saw this too (not specifically the Indianapolis part, but the neutral site part), and outside of the Bills and Bengals making up their game this is the most fair and equitable thing to do. I’ve heard many people say that the Bills should be awarded the #1 seed based on their H2H win over the Chiefs (a local Boston sports show host is adamant this is the only fair thing to do). I’ve heard many others say the Chiefs should be #1 based on winning percentage. My opinion is neither scenario is close to being fair. If they’re not both going to play 17 games then a neutral site is the way to go for a potential AFCCG.

Good news coming out of the doctors press conference.
I heard a commentator mention he was surprised there were more press conferences at the hospital. And I'm thinking the doctors are probably busy doctoring. What do they want? Hourly Pulse, O2, and BP readings?

Best tiebreaker would be the team with the best Conference record among the top two teams, otherwise, just go with the winning percentages. Seriously... you want to win the Super Bowl, it shouldn't be contingent on having home field advantage the whole way through. Granted, having the extra week off is a bigger deal.

Setting a schedule shouldn't be hard. Either you need Buffalo and Cincinnati to finish (restart?) their game or not. To do so will be a heavy burden on the two teams and they need to know sooner than later... as in earlier this week. And if that impacts Week 18 schedules, those opponents needed to know already. The NFL has completely botched something as simple as scheduling games.

Yeah, that’s ludicrous. I understand that we all wanted updates, but like you said the medical staff had way more important things to do.

Cancelling the game between the Bills and Bengals creates potential competitive inequities in certain playoff scenarios. In an effort to mitigate those inequities, NFL clubs will consider tomorrow in a Special League Meeting a resolution recommended by the Commissioner and approved today by the Competition Committee, consisting of two elements:
1 - The AFC Championship Game will be played at a neutral site if the participating teams played an unequal number of games and both could have been the number one seed and hosted the game had all AFC clubs played a full 17-game regular season. Those circumstances involve Buffalo or Cincinnati qualifying for the game as a road team and are listed below:
Scenario 1

Buffalo and Kansas City both win or both tie – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.
Scenario 2
Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Baltimore wins or ties – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.
Scenario 3
Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Cincinnati wins – a Buffalo or Cincinnati vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.
2 - If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati in Week 18 it will have defeated Cincinnati, a divisional opponent, twice but will not be able to host a playoff game because Cincinnati will have a higher winning percentage for a 16-game schedule than Baltimore will for a 17-game schedule.
If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati and if those two clubs are schedule to play a Wild Card game against one another, the site for that game would be determined by a coin toss. If Cincinnati wins the Week 18 game or if Baltimore and Cincinnati are not scheduled to play one another in the Wild Card round, the game sites would be determined by the regular scheduling procedures.
"As we considered the football schedule, our principles have been to limit disruption across the league and minimize competitive inequities," Goodell said. "I recognize that there is no perfect solution. The proposal we are asking the ownership to consider, however, addresses the most significant potential equitable issues created by the difficult, but necessary, decision not to play the game under these extraordinary circumstances."

Well if they want a "neutral" site that would be fair to the attendance of both fan bases then it would seem to be Pittsburgh, IMHO. It's the only location roughly halfway between both cities.
