Heard on the radio tonight that the CEO of AT&T Wireless finally admitted that his 3G network was just not up to speed for the number of iphones and Blackberry phones they have subscribed. Considering that Apple is looking at opening up the market to Verizon and maybe others, AT&T CEO has vowed to throw billions into expanding their network to double the present speed to 1.4Mbps everywhere in the next 12 months and promised to have 4G ready within 4-6 years. he said they would begin to roll out 4G in select test markets beginning in 2012.
Now that sounds like what a VP of T-Mobile told me in 2003 they would have by 2008. He said t-mobile will be the fastest and largest cell phone and PDA company in the world. ha ha!
One thing is certain, AT&T is pretty cash rich so they just may make it happen.
What I want to see is the AT&T network get rid of tiered pricing and just sell a flat rate with true unlimited bandwidth. If the network is adequately sized for the volume, there is no reason to have these overage surcharges. Frankly, we don't need 4G speeds for cell phones. EVDO Rev A seems plenty adequate.
