The Bloomberg story probably gets it right that only texting will be available. I think CNBC may have also misreported the satellite count as Globalstar has 24 ground stations. They would need considerably more satellites to cover 80% of the planet to be effective in an "emergency".

Given how large Dishy McFlatface, that seems exceedingly unlikely. Having the kind of transmit power and beam directivity required probably isn't going to be very easy in a bar phone form factor.

Apparently there has been 4G satellite telephony in the works for a while now. Wired magazine ran a story last year about such a system.

Glad I mentioned it as you guys are quick to find more debate on this. As usual, we wait to see what Apple actually is going to have in the future. Personally, I don't need it and doing just fine with my 4G iphone. I have no plans to upgrade from my iphone 11. But I look forward to seeing what's new.

You dont understand berween hitting a co vs hitting a satellite

Leo satellite 1000 miles up...1000 miles down...hit landline network..person resoonds..1000 miles up..1000 miles down...its atleast 4 thousand miles...a co runs fiber with maybe 7nsec delay...satellite has a much longer processing delay..enough that echoing makes 2 way communication unusable

Much like the old radio long distance communication calls in the 30s ,40s and even 50s

Speed in copper = 230 Million m/s

Your claim that these delays are certain to make such a system unworkable is silly for the above reasons backed up by the fact that satellite phones work just fine today with satellites much more distant. No, your dialup modem or fax machine isn't going to work but that's not important anymore.

The point of using satellite is for emergency use in those instances where terrestrial service isn't available. I think if you look at the number of people using SPOT, you'll be shocked. In the fourth quarter of 2020, 8,500 SPOT units shipped.

Adm. Grace Hopper used to carry a one foot length of wire with her to demonstrate to people one nanosecond of propagation delay. So if the Home Office for your TelCo was located on the other side of your home’s wall, you might have 7 ns delay. It’s more likely to be 7 μs for a local call or 7 ms for a call out of state.

I will agree with lag complicating human conversations; one doesn’t need to look much further than a Skype/Zoom/Teams call to experience people stepping on each other’s words.
