Newbie Help with DVR Please

I am purchasing a Tivo unit for my parents for X-Mas. I have a DirecTV DVR with dual tuners and I am not sure how the single tuner works. They have cable and are still currently using a VCR. What I need to know is if the Tivo unit is single tuner, can they still watch a show through their cable box and record another through the Tivo?

Disclaimer: I'm assuming your parents aren't getting DirecTV. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Don't get a single tuner PVR. You could use splitters and switches to do that with a single tuner PVR (assuming your parents don't have digital cable), but it would be a hassle and the live-TV PVR features (pause, rewind, etc.) wouldn't be available while you are recording. If they have digital cable, your best bet is to get a PVR from the cable company if they offer one.

They are not getting DirecTV although I have been trying to talk them into it for years. I will look into the cable company they have and see what they offer as far a PVR.
