I would like to use a direct tv receiver in Canada. I have a friend in Tennesse with Direct. If I get a receiver from him will it work in Canada without plugging into the phone jack and also what degrees is the Direct pointed at. I was told 101 west is this correct.

Yes, the SD core channels are on the 101W satellite.
Without the phone line you can't order PPV with the remote.
