New To Hacking FTA

Hi everyone! Need alot of advice here. I really don't know anything about FTA and have a great interest to learn. Let me start by saying I have a Pansat 2500A and the current files need to be updated. Can't pick up any channels at all and don't know where to start.

Do I need a cable, software, anything else?
