A new receiver is starting to be released from DirecTV, but it is currently very limited in areas that it is available. Until production ramps up, there will be very few of these out there.

The H23 receiver is IDENTICAL to a H21. The only difference - there is no need for the BBC converter box to be attached. The converter is built into the receiver. If the user has a single-wire setup (SWM), the box will automatically disable the built-in converter, and operate using the SWM.

Essentially, all other design and elements are the same, including dimensions and color.

The first software release is coming this weekend to the cutting edge testers, and the box is now in the distribution channels.

UPDATE: Jef Card has posted the first pictures of the H23 receiver:

There is belief that a similar thing will be done with the HR21 series, a HR23, again, the same box but eliminating the need for the BBC.

I wonder how many people who are currently diplexing in something after their BBC or backfeeding a modulated signal will be screwed over by this new setup.

The external BBC seems like such a simple and inexpensive solution to what I would hope is a temporary problem (failure to deploy SWM on a widespread basis).

Yes ! And Dying to upgrade my HR20. I may be getting an HR-21 in a few weeks, but if these new receivers are on their way I might just hold off for now, and get 2 HR-23. If I don't have to wait too long. What do you think ,Less then 6 months?

Why would you consider this to be an upgrade? It will have the same functionality (minus OTA) as your HR21.

Because my HR20 is a piece of crap. OTA I couldn't use if I wanted too. And I don't have a HR21. And why wouldn't you consider this an upgrade ? Newer model receiver, with BBC's built in ,The ability to have 1 wire DVR. I'd say thats an upgrade.

The HR20 will work as a one-wire DVR also. On the basis of the posted information, both the HR20 and the HR23 would need to be connected to an SWM8 (or the new SWM dish) to operate over one wire. There's no difference.

And I have two HR20s, and an HR21, and there's nothing about the HR21 that I would consider as an upgrade over the HR20, so if the HR23 is just an HR21 with "built-in" BBCs then it's nothing special.

I agree, if in fact nothing else is changed, I dont see anything really special about it over the 20/21.

As many Service calls I go out on with burned out BBC's I hope they fixed that issue. I certainly don't want to carry twice as many HD boxes in my truck now for SC's and risk getting past21 charge-backs on the damn things.

I doubt anyone has one yet, they are just starting to be used in installs in a few markets. For clarification, the H23 is out (non-dvr).

The HR23 is speculation for future, not available yet.
