CAMBRIDGE, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 2004--Amino Communications has introduced its first IPTV set-top box to offer compatibility with high definition TV (HDTV) and Microsoft's Windows Media 9 (WMV9) low bit-rate codec. The AmiNET120 enables Telcos to offer TV services to homes further afield, via DSL networks, whilst also enabling a more realistic and involving viewing experience.
WMV9 extends the reach of broadband television to more homes and networks by reducing the bandwidth required to transmit high quality digital video content. The AmiNET120 enables Telcos and service providers to reach more consumers and offer a wider choice of movies-on-demand without the need to upgrade the local loop or network infrastructure.
The AmiNET120 also supports HDTV displays to the 720p or 1080i standards, offering IPTV consumers access to high definition video content. HDTV provides CD-quality sound and a far superior image quality to today's standard definition TV sets.
Bob Giddy, CEO at Amino, commented: "We are constantly looking at ways to help our telecommunications customers deliver the best in IPTV services to as many homes as possible. High definition content and reduced network bandwidth requirements are driving adoption of IPTV; as well as Windows Media Video support we are also launching an MPEG-4 AVC compatible set-top box early next year."
The AmiNET120 also supports MPEG-2 and is available in the same compact, stylish enclose as the AmiNET110 and offers a higher level of middleware compatibility than any other IPTV set-top box on the market. The set-top box provides and elegant and powerful means of delivery sophisticated interactive digital television including multicast and video-on-demand alongside broadband internet access.
"Innovation at the set-top box front has always been a crucial enabling factor in IPTV deployments. This is now more than ever the case as low bit-rate solutions are becoming a key requirement for many operators," said Ivan Verbesselt, vice president of Alcatel's Information Communication and Entertainment activities.
