Need computer help

what im trying to do is have my laptop which has an s-video out hooked up so i can watch programs that i have stored on my network on my main tv. i am able to get wallapaper up on the screen but no icons and when i open a video file it just plays on the computer not the tv. the lap top is a compaq running xp. any help would be greatly appreciated

Look in the software dvd player's setup menus..............
I use WinDVD, and there's boxes to check, to send to tv.

it was that i had checked the extend my desktop on this monitor check so thats why i was only getting the wallpaper once i move the media player for enough over it appeared on the tv lol oops
