A temporary antenna at NET Television’s KTNE/Alliance tower has partially restored service for viewers in the Nebraska Panhandle. Channel 13 has been off the air since April 9 when the 80-foot, 10-ton antenna fell nearly 1,500 feet to the ground.
Viewers in an approximately 40-mile radius around the Alliance tower can once again receive NET Television programming. The NET Radio signal to the area was temporarily disrupted during the investigation and installation of the temporary tower, but it has been fully restored.
The State’s Risk Management and Attorney General offices have been consulted and are actively involved with assisting NET. Crews, engineers and insurance adjusters have been on site assessing the situation, and investigating possible causes of the antenna failure. The antenna was installed in 2008 and its life expectancy is usually at least 20 years.
While the investigation is ongoing, NET sought $385,000 in state funding to cover the replacement and installation costs. The Nebraska Legislature’s Appropriations Committee recommended approval of the funding request and the bill is awaiting a vote of the full legislature and a signature from Governor Ricketts. Once approved, it could take up to four months to order the antenna and have it permanently installed.
“We realize the temporary signal will likely not restore service to Scottsbluff and the surrounding region,” said CEO & General Manager Mark Leonard. “Because this failure is a rather unusual occurrence, we are working through several measures to resolve this as quickly as possible to restore service to all of our viewers.”
Translators K06KR Crawford Channel 6 and K08LN Harrison Channel 8 will be off the air until a permanent repair is completed at the KTNE tower.
