NCAA 2013 Football Season

Looks to be another year where the West is the dominant division, and it may not be close.

Of course teams can improve and drop off, but from what I've seen and am seeing, the east looks average.

Georgia is the only question mark for me at this point.

Arian Foster admits to getting paid while going to Tennessee... not been a good year for the NCAA.

"Look at the attention it's getting," Foster said. "They really have us hoodwinked into thinking taking money is wrong as a college athlete. It's wrong for us, but it's not wrong for them. I guarantee every NCAA official has a (BMW) or Benz or something. That's not wrong, but it's wrong for me to get $20 to get something to eat? Dez Bryant couldn't get taken out to dinner by Deion Sanders, his mentor, he sat out a whole season because of that? That's not wrong? But if you can drive around in a Benz, that's OK? It's not right."

Pay them then, and take the scholarship away.

I'd rather they sort it out and be done with it. I'm not for having it both ways though.

I know that the schools make millions but thousands of not athlete students would kill for the hundreds of thousands of free assistance that those players are given.

As for Foster saying it isn't right, he knew the rules when he signed the scholarship. If he didn't think it was right, there are several pro leagues around the globe that would have gladly paid him for his services I'd imagine.

I have better idea, time for the NFL to start a minor league and put the choice on the student athletes. You play minor leagues, no scholarship...but NONE of the universities can sell the likeness those players that chose to go to school.

Its not like the NCAA or the NFL don't have the money.

Depending on nfl rules on age of entry, and maybe even is spite of it, most of your talent would still end up at college, the TV contracts and exposure would guarantee it, at least for a while.

I'd be OK with the idea though, but the option is there now. Most athletes choose the college option for a reason, which is why I have no sympathy for the argument for getting paid and it being tough.

I was in the system as a baseball player at FSU, that archaic system needs a complete overhaul, but it will never happen because universities have enjoyed the millions and millions too much and they will NEVER give up that gravy train.

Never understood the gripe from college players who get full rides.. Go talk to the kids who have to pay there own way before you cry poor. Talk to the kids whos parents and them have to work to pay the way.

In baseball I'll never understand it. There are COUNTLESS semi pro leagues that will pay for kids to play. If they want that, go there. If not, sign the scholarship, take a fantastic deal in the education with the chance to do more and follow the rules.

I don't care which way they go with this. However, taking money is currently against the rules and players and programs who break that rule should be punished. It can't be an even playing field when some teams are playing by the rules and some aren't.

I don't disagree with the thought, but show me a program where it isn't happening. The playing field as far as this is concerned is equal except when it comes to how much money can be offered.

Making paying them legal won't make the money schools any less than they are.

Kids will still want to go to the blue bloods. The power schools.

Making it "legal" won't make it "level" anymore than it is now.

The only thing that can somewhat make it right is penalties, but the NCAA is all over the board on that.

Arkansas is about to throw this one away

The scholarship is a great deal for the...what?...98% of the college players who will never play professional football. Likewise, where else can these aspiring 18-year old kids receiving expert coaching and a the best competition to hone their football skills. My biggest complaint is there is way, way, way too much emphasis on the football program and not enough on academics. My nephew graduated from Michigan a few years ago with BS degree in general studies (e.g., sports psychology, communications, something along these lines). He entered the University having a 1460 SAT score and wanted to study engineering. There's just not enough time in the day to be a real student - all of his time was devoted to football. After football he has been a part-time student working toward a MS in Chemical Engineering...had to take a buttload of undergraduate courses since he did not have any of the prerequisites. The NCAA should reduce the number of football contact hours by more than 50% IMo.

Couldn't he have bypassed football if he knew he wouldn't make pro and wanted a different career path? Even if he had aspirations of pro ball, wouldn't most kill for that chance then also have the opportunity to do what every other student has to do.

He made the choice to play , if he wanted to do something else, I fail to see how that's anyone else's fault or decision.

I was one of those poor kids. I got a full ride but I was not even allowed to work a part time to have some laundry money, or to occasionally take a girlfriend to a movie. And if I had to home on emergency, forget it.

You can assume all you want, but I lived that life and it was not easy some many of you think it is.

I tell ya, after sitting thru a tropical downpour for three over time sets and watching the weirdest game to start out with an amazing special teams display from VT today, bland offense (to start with) and the #2 defense in the country pretty much shut down Marshall after the 1st half I'm just kinda in a daze. It rained so damn hard in that game that it was coming in all directions for about an hour!!

Congrats VT on #700 win of all time!

You could have taken an alternative route.

Or you could have been one of those without a scholarship. And have had to work to pay their way, and room and board and food. Then the difference probably, for most, would have still been greater in your favor.
