NBC Universal has signed a deal with Wurld Media to allow consumers to rent movies and select NBCU's TV content through the company's file sharing software, Peer Impact.
Users of Peer Impact, which Wurld Media calls the first legal peer to peer file sharing service, will be able to rent films like Ray and The Bourne Supremacy as well as TV specials which have been produced specifically for VOD, like Blind Date and Jerry Springer: Uncensored.
Fans will be able to view programs for a 24-hour period on their PCs for a yet to be determined fee.
With this move, it appears as though NBCU is testing the market for on-demand movies and shows delivered via PCs, while also trying to discourage fans of its movies and series to trade files illegally on peer-to-peer networks like Grokster or BitTorrent.
"NBC Universal has a long history of embracing technology to better serve our viewers," said NBC Universal CEO Bob Wright in a statement announcing the new alliance. "This agreement is a significant step forward in our goal to capitalize on the myriad possibilities of new digital-media services, in a way that allows us to safeguard our content from illegal distribution."
At this point, no NBC network series are being offered through Peer Impact. Recently NBC with DirecTV to offer select prime-time series to consumers on a pay-per-view basis.
