Many NFL fans in Utah got a rude awakening tuning in for the Steelers-Patriots season opener Thursday night: If they were DirecTV (NYSE:T) subscribers, they were greeted with a black screen due to a carriage dispute.

KSL-TV -- the wide-reaching NBC affiliate for the state -- has been off the air for about 200,000 DirecTV subscribers due to yet another contract dispute. The fight threatens Sunday night's Giants-Cowboys game as well.

KSL GM Tanya Vea says the old contract ran out at the end of June but was subject to three extensions since.

Just in time for the NFL's opening weekend, DirecTV and Salt Lake City NBC affiliate KSL-TV have reached an agreement in principle on a new retransmission consent agreement.
In a statement on its website on Sept. 12, KSL said a deal had been reached.

“KSL received communication from DirecTV Saturday that they have agreed to fairly compensate KSL for its valuable content” KSL vice president/general manager Tanya Vea said in a statement. “Thank you to our viewers for your patience. KSL is now back on DirecTV.”

The recent blackout of an NBC affiliate that prevented thousands of DirecTV subscribers from enjoying NFL games calls to mind so many football idioms: Obviously, someone dropped the ball, but was it a fumble or did the opposing team run interference?This being the pay-TV industry, that naturally depends on whom you ask. The three-week blackout, which came to an end Sunday, affected an estimated 200,000 DirecTV subscribers in the Salt Lake City area when KSL-TV, an NBC affiliate there, went dark. The disruption began Aug. 21 after contract negotiations broke down and the two sides could not reach an agreement on “retransmission consent” fees -- the fees pay-TV providers pay to broadcasters for the right to carry their signals.The dispute initially received little attention, but things got serious last Thursday when DirecTV subscribers found themselves unable to watch the NFL opener between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers on NBC Channel 5 in Utah.
