Directv is claiming that you can record 50hrs. of mpeg 4 HD video on the 250 gb hard drive. If you break this down, that means it is 5 GB per hour. If you break 5gb an hour into minutes, it is about 85 mb per minute. This is what surprises me... if you break it to per second, it is like 1.4 megs per second... how is this possible? Did i calculate wrong???

Matt

There's a difference between megabits and megabytes. You need to multiply by 8 to get the figure in megabits per second.

1.4Mbps * 1024 = 1433.6Kbps * 8 = 11468.8kbps

So it is really 11,469 kbps.
There is your proper calculation for the bitrate.

1024 bytes in 1 kilobyte

8 bits in a byte

I think you mean:

1.4 MBps *1024 = 1433.6 KBps * 8 = 11468.8 Kbps

B= Bytes
b= bits

Either way, 11 Mbps isn't too shabby. Using this rough calculation has the MPEG2 DVR posting a bit rate of about 19 Mbps.

yes that's what i meant. KB for Kilo Bytes and kb for kilo bits

What about the space Direct will reserve for VOD - shouldn't you subtract that from the rated capacity which would reduce your bit rate considerably
