How many people remember DirecTV issuing a press release a long time ago announcing that they would be carrying MovieWatch when it launched? Well, the biggest question that I have yet to have answered is if there is a limitation of some kind that allows DirecTV to cancel the deal if they haven't launched because it seems like it's been almost a year and a half. I received an email that updated me on the status of MovieWatch and Stand-Up Comedy TV (launching this month) from a gentleman by the name of Rich. He said he got the following reply from MovieWatch when he emailed them:
Thanks for checking in. We've just concluded very significant acquisition
discussions regarding a cable property owned by NBCUniversal(Trio). After
much effort and due diligence, it looks like the numbers (potential revenue
and subscribers) aren't going to work for us. We're regrouping and looking
at a number of alternative distribution platforms(video on demand,
broadband, satellite and broadcast). In any event, we won't be launching
January 2005 as planned.when I get a new timetable in place, I'll let you
know.
It would have been very interesting if MovieWatch were able to merge with Trio, like it seems MovieWatch said they were trying to do.
