Hey sat guys and gals,

I am trying to organize my HDD and all my movies. I was curious if you wanted to lend your personal ideas and opinions on the subject.

I have some trouble determining which category or genre to put every movie into. Some movies fit into several. Therefore, I am just trying dabble with making out a really "all-encompassing" list of movie genres to make it all really convenient for my personal use. Would you like to add your own personal opinions and suggestions?

Here are the categories I have pondered thus far:

1] Action & Adventure

2] Animation & Cartoon

3] Biography & History

4] Comedy

5] Crime / Detective / Mystery

6] Drama

7] EPIC movies

8] Family & Kids

9] Fantasy & Myth

10] Horror

11] Love & Romance

12] Musicals

13] Science Fiction

14] Thriller & Suspense

15] WAR

16] Westerns & Cowboy

I can come up with many movies to fill every category listed above, maybe weak on a few like Musicals (I don't have too many of those). But, I was just wondering how many movie genres others are utlilizig and how you are titling them all.

Just wondering what everyone else is all doing in this aspect. Please pipe in your comments and ideas and discuss what you do personally. I'd like to hear it all.

Well my family owned a video store from the early 80's to mid 90's and your list looks complete. We had hundreds of westerns on VHS. Always a strong Genre.

I also use Actor catagories, ie. Clint Eastwood, John Wayne. I have everything lumped together on the storage drives and then create an index of folders with shortcuts in them to the movie files. Many movies are cross-indexed.

My EHDDs (from memory)
1) Westerns (used to share with War)
2) War
3) Scifi
4) Classics
5) Horror
6) Favorites
7)Space
8)Music
I have several series drives, all with HD programs
1a) Stargate Atlantis
2a) CSI
3a) CSI Miami
4a) NCIS / NCIS LA
5a) TV Sci fi (Battlstar Galactica, Stargate Universe, Sarah Connors Chronicles, Bionic Woman, Dollhouse)
6a) Chuck
this is an incomplete list, but lets me know I need to do some indexing... ;)

This is where I am at now with the genre categories for MOVIES only on the HDD for my AZBox receiver:

ACTION & ADVENTURE
ANIMATION & CARTOON
BIOGRAPHY & HISTORY
CLASSIC SCI-FI AND HORROR
COMEDY
CRIME - DETECTIVE - MYSTERY
DRAMA
EPIC FILMS
FAMILY & KIDS
FANTASY & MYTH
HORROR
LOVE & ROMANCE
MUSICALS
SCIENCE FICTION
THRILLER & SUSPENSE
WAR
WESTERNS & COWBOY

I had a SCI-FI and a HORROR category previously, but I had to add a "CLASSIC SCIFI & HORROR" category to accomodate the old (especially the B&W) movies and keep them separated from modern ones. This "CLASSIC" category will contain all the original pre 1960 - 1970 flicks like PSYCHO, The Fly, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Journey to the Center of the Earth, King Kong, The Lost World, The BLOB, etc.

I leave myself with a quandary by doing this as some movies can fall both ways. For exampe: 2001 A Space Odyssey. It is old enough to be considered a classic (and it really is a classic in more rites than just its age). But, it is so well done that it should be considered a modern Sci-Fi that was before it's time! I'll have to take each borderline movie on as a case-by-case basis to decide which category they get included within.

Just a sidebar comment: I wish there was a way (with the AZBox) to include a movie as one single source in multiple directories without it taking up additional HDD space. I don't think I can do this here. I don't think it works like favorite channel lists in this regard (where I can link the same channel to multiple fav lists). I think that the only method to do this would require me to actually have more than one copy of the movie stored on the HDD (one copy for each genre category). I will take that up with the AZBox discussion group (it is not really appropriate in this area).

Next, I am going to set up multiple HDDs. I have a max limit of 1 TB for each, but can have three HDDs connected simultaneously (two external USB drives and oe internal HDD). I think I will use one for recording current satellite television broadcasts (namely OETA PBS HD for NOVA and NATURE and that ilk) and then another HDD for TV sitcom series (like MASH, STAR TREK, BONANZA, QUINCY, ROCKFORD FILES, RAWHIDE, HOGAN'S HEROES, GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, GUNSMOKE, etc. etc. etc.).

Hense, a total of three HDDs connected at the same time with different content on each. Some really neat possiblilites here... EVEN MUCH MORE with networking to my PC's!

I have a Linksys NMH300 Network Media Hub. Right now there are two WD 2TB drives installed loaded with movies. This will stream 3 movies at once in DVD format or other. it is 10/100/1000 capable. It feeds all the computers and a couple of XBoxes. I'm leaning toward getting a STB like an AZBox and it should be right at home on my network.
