I need some ideas of how to mount a primestar to a big pipe, c-band pipe ( 3 1/2OD)
I should know how to do this, lol but I'm coming up empty tonite. Gave a friend a fta box for Christmas and since the WAF is ZERO for sat dishes bigger than DN, I didn't think he'd want to try it out yet. >I thought he was about to buy a house in the country but that sale fell thu<
Previous owner of his current house left a big-dish pipe in a far corner of his big yard, has a dishnetwork dish on it now that he isn't using, he thinks she won't notice a 3' primestar out there LOL. So, we are going to wait until she is gone for a couple of hours, and throw this dish up for him...cable already in conduit and buried.
No motor-going to go for G18 and leave it fixed for now.
So I need to fashion something that will bolt quickly on this pole, so we can aim the dish and retreat to his basement tv room.
ps I don't have a torch or welder.

Let me repeat the more pertinent parts . . .

Okay, he's got a DishNetwork dish somehow adapted to this 3.5 inch pipe?
Or, he has a DishNetwork J-pole mounted somewhere...?

Since this is a one-time test, and not a permanent fix, how 'bout this...
The Primestar probably wants 2 & 3/8 post or something, eh?
Get some plastic pipe, split it down the side, and shove it onto the existing DishNetwork pole!
Drop your Primestar onto the white plastic pipe.
Aim, tighten, and hide. ;)

Have I missed something?

well you got a 3 1/2 pole and i take it its a 3 inch mount on the primestar ( or if its the 2 and 3/8 inch version see last part **)

get two small sections of pipe and have your welder make an adapter with them
on section should be so it would fit into the primestar mount and the other side should be so it would fit onto the current 3 1/2 inch pole. :)

** if its a 2 and 3/8 version a regular section of fence post should work just drop it into the 3 1/2 inch pipe. you might have to center & level and then shim it in place

Have you got a small length of the proper size pipe for the Primestar mount? If so, chuck a 8 inch length of it in a vice and cut 4 inches of it (split it halfway, in another words) so that you can pound what's left flat enough to fit around the pipe. Then clamp it to the existing pipe with some big U bolts. Best to use conduit, easier to cut and get to shape, if you can. Regular sch 40 pipe won't work without a LOT of work...LOL

Mount your dish on the upper half and have fun. :)

I realize that I may not have been clear on what I mean, if you need more clarification I'll post a pic of some I did for D* dishes tomorow morning if you need it.

cool ideas

Thanks for the input! I like Anole's idea, if that little DN j-pole is strong enough to hold that mount/primestar. It's already clamped to the pipe with some long bolts/muffler-clamp looking brackets so it just might do it. And I think I'll come up with a backup-system in case that isn't strong enough, and take it along too. I do have some short pieces of 2 1/2" and some black plastic to shim with also.

Muffler clamps will be prefect for the job. If the claps dont fit in the j-pole mounts, use the claps to hold on a piece of plywood that has the j-pole mounted on it.
On ebay 2 3/8" J-poles are about $20.

Just remembered I still have the j--pole that came with a directv dish (the one with the 3lnb-ka lnb setup) that was given to me last year, its much sturdier than a reg Dish500 jpole, I think it should work just fine.

I've done a number of pipe/post installs for various antennas/dishes. I have often taken a piece of PT 2x8 or 2x10 as needed about a foot long. Get a pair of large round or square as needed U bolts and some fender washers. Mount the J pole or whatever mount to the 2X and drill appropriate holes for the U bolts. Of course check everything for square. Get to the desired height on the pole, Put the U bolts around the pipe and through the board, put on the washers and nuts, fine tune the height and direction, and cinch it down. You want it tight, but not so you start bending the board.

If you are in a severe wind area, you might consider drilling a hole through the board and the pipe after installation and run a lag screw in to keep the whole thing from twisting.

Readily available and inexpensive materials, a few minutes of prep, and a very quick install.

And, should the situation require, rapidly removed with little evidence left behind.

Piece of cake.

LOL

Got that one right! IF its daytime when we do this, I plan on being at least to the county line before she gets back home ,haha.

Excellent thread, Guys! I can almost hear the familiar "hoooowannnk...." sound of a P* dish twisted into place on a steel pole, the soft "kraaatchit- kraaatchit- kraaatchit" of a socket wrench, and pitter-pattering feet running back to the house, after a quick cry of "SHE'S COMING!!!!!"....all in near-total darkness! ...Awesome!:D:up

Yes, its one of those cases ,haha. Known them both for nearly 20yrs but she never got into sat tv when her hubby and I were into it, back in the old c-band days. Now that they're retired and into a bigger place, there won't be 'one of those big ugly things in MY yard' lol. So we're going with stealth technology.
