I do seem to spend a lot of time with the FTA hobby. It's great! :) But every once in a while my mind wanders and I take on other projects. I like fixing things and restoration projects are fun. It would be great to be restoring a classic car but that's out of my realm for now. So I take on smaller things. A couple months ago the neighbor across the alley drug an old Weber gas grill out of his yard and left it in the alley. It looked like it had potential so after a few weeks I caught him out in the alley and I inquired about the grill. He said usually stuff he drags out here is gone in a week or so. He didn't want it. So I drug it home and have been making it a great little grill again. But wow! how bad it was to clean up! If I knew how many hours I would put into this project, that grill would still be in the alley ;) It needed attention all over. And the plastic wood just didn't do it for me. So I've done some customizing and dropped in a high performance replacement grill under the hood. I'm thinking about converting it to nitrous...errr I mean natural gas. ;)

I still need to make a wood handle. I'm tossing around some ideas there yet.

WOW, that looks nice now Fred!!
I would have liked to seen a picture before the restoration, but you did a great job.

I love cooking on a grill, but haven't took the time in the last few weeks been getting wood ready for winter.

I probably should have taken some "before" pictures. But I'm telling you it was so bad that if I showed you the pictures you would never eat anything off that grill no matter what I did to it. ;) It first should have been disinfected with a flame thrower. LOL But it did turn out pretty good. I'm pleased with the results so far.

That looks great. Very good job.

I love building and restoring things. Totally gutted and redid my current home 6 years ago and my place at the lake 2 years ago. I close on a new home tomorrow and I am trying to decide how much I want to do to it. Its nowhere near as bad as my current home was, but it needs some updating and stuff. Not sure my knees can hold out to do some of it and since I own my company and work from home, I can't take too long doing it or work will get behind.

I found the serial number on this unit. I found out this Weber grill is a 1998 Genesis 1000LX . This unit still has factory warranty that applies to the enamel finish on the hood, 25 years :)
I want to find another gas manifold valve assembly for this grill. I'll have two, one set for propane and the other for natural gas. I will be able to switch between the two fuels in a few minutes without tools. So I can burn NG at home but when the grill needs to travel it will be LPG. :) Found a grill exactly like mine for $10 on CL and thought SCORE!! but it was 130 miles away. :( But I will find it :)

Don't let your neighbor see it, he might want it back. :) Nice job by the way.
His wife saw me working on it and made the comment, " I didn't say he could throw that away" " I wanted to sell it" I turned and gave her the "Don't even start with me " look and she said no more. But I imagine he will see it at some point LOL. If he wants it that bad $350 will cover it ;)

The rest of the story; As I continued making the grill just right, I pondered the idea of converting the unit to natural gas. After a lot of research I decided to do that., but take it one step further. I wanted to find another gas manifold for this unit. Convert the second one to NG. The manifold is held in the grill with two wing nuts. You can change the manifold, with the appropriate fuel line already installed, in less than 5 minutes with no tools. So I went looking for another throw-away Weber. I found one on CL for $10. Perfect! But alas it was not local and I was not going that far. :( I kept looking for another unit. I had noticed a top of the line Weber Summit for sale on CL and it was a NG grill. But more than I wanted to spend. Well that grill kept dropping in price and a year after it first appeared I finally went out and offered him $50. Shocker! He took it. :) Well he got it for nothing and wanted to convert to propane. But that's a whole different deal and he just decided to unload it. So I ended up with a different grill. But was the beginning of the cold weather and I just set them aside. Well we got a hot spell the last few days so I put the old Genny on CL for $350. Gone in hours. A guy sent his wife 35 miles with his truck and the $350 in hand to get it without looking. I should have asked for more ;)

Wait, $350 for the old crap grill you resurrected and made whole again?

Now you rock the $50 NG from Craigslist?

Sweet.

Sent from a phone, probably while I'm driving over the speed limit through a school zone with construction workers present.

This is reminding me.
I have a buddy that gave me a weber to use for parts to replace the burners and reflector parts on my weber.

One more thing on my ever growing list of Spring projects!

So now I've pulled the "GrillGrates" off my current grill to put on the new Weber. I still have the cast iron grates, so I will replace them and sell that grill also. It's a Perfect Flame I bought for $25 on CL three years ago. I think I'll get $150 for it with cover tank and rotisserie.

Magic Static will be the star of the next new show on History., Grill Restorers of America. :D
Too funny, the guy I sold the grill to called me and said he was bringing me two of his old ones that I could restore. LOL I don't want to restore grills. They are way more work than it's worth just to clean them. Nastiness with a factor of 100!!!
Today I was busy buying a car. I scored an 05 Subaru Outback with a brand new engine. The rest of the car was totally gone through and all fluids serviced, new brakes, all new belts and hoses. It drives like a new one. I worked with the Senior Master Subaru Tech who sold me the car :) I was at his shop today fixing the heated seats. He was going to delete them and said no way! I want the heated seats! $5000 cheap :)

Nice job restoring the grill!! :-D What better way to entertain the guests with BBQ Tongs in one hand and FTA Remote in the other! :)
Like you, when there isn't much going on with FTA, I enjoy fixing and improving lots of things around the house; I like to gain my Wifes Approval Factors for future projects!

Recently I finished restoring my 1980's Teac X-7R Reel To Reel Machiene, I even converted a Teac RC-90 Remote to work with it! :) I gave the X-7R two rare black colored VU Meters that belonged to another Teac model. I'm enjoying listening to 40-50+ year old Stereophonic Reel To Reel Tapes, while watching NHK World. :)

New pics of my Non-FTA project, Teac X-7R with black VU Meters I installed! :) I can now listen to some relaxing In-Flight Music from the 1960's first generation Jet Set! :-D I have several more of these tapes on the way.

"Truth is stranger than fiction" I just sold the Perfect Flame grill. It was a young gal in the Air Force. She was a Maintenance Crew Chief for a chopper squadron. She pulled up in a Subaru Crosstrek and I was thinking no way to get that in there. But she whipped out her tool kit and disassembled that grill and stuffed it all in there. Big Native American gal, got a "plumber's crack bigger than my father-in-law ;) Girl with a tool kit; kinda gets you right there ;)
