More news on ATSC 3.0...

I never understood stations turning on DRM. Their market share is already being eaten away by streaming services and OTT. So they deploy a technology to make the picture better to try and retain viewers, and then promptly put it behind a wall and block people from using it. Put copyrights on the tech that cause LG to back out. Not very smart. It reminds me of when TV was invented and movie theaters and radio thought it was just a fad that would fade away.

And besides who wants to pirate the FTA OTA anyways, which is heavily censored by the FCC with bleeping out 7 dirty words and blurring out nudity stuffs, and there's no high quality TV shows like Games Of Thrones, Sopranos, Star Trek Picard and many other top notch R rated TV or movies shows out there not available on OTA world.

The rest of other junks out there are mostly old shows back in the 50's, 60's and 70's has been beaten to death too many time and and same goes for religious and info ads junks out there.:p

DRM is a waste of time, bandwidth and money putting into it!!🤮

Only thing is worthy are sports and news on FTA OTA and tends to have pretty good ratings viewings audiences out there. :hatsoff

DRM lets them do pay TV OTA and they used to have that with uncut Moives and the late night adult movies

Yeah, but there are peoples out there just want FTA OTA uncut TV and movies with ads mixed in just like in Europe and besides most are sick of it paying for the good stuffs out there. :hatsoff

If you want the good stuff, you will soon have to pay for it, advertising no longer supports OTA, if they did not currently have per sub fees, they would be gone.

Hence this move to streaming, gotta pay for the shows.

It amazes me that after all the failures along the way the industry still thinks it can control access to it's content. There has never been, nor will there ever be, a successful system. Remember how hard they tried to copy protect video tapes? Every attempt was broken. Heck, go all the way back to the Atari computer system. They thought they could prevent copying of their games by skewing the tracks. It was broken before you could turn around twice. What makes this even sillier is that there isn't a single standard network show worth paying for, not one, so this notion that they can make money by charging for content, no matter the quality of the image, is what comes of too much funny smoke in the room. Don't worry about DRM, somewhere someone has already hacked it and is just waiting in the wings to pounce should it ever actually go live.

The quality of this post is top. You've got superb understanding of the issue and deliver your thoughts in a very practical way. I love it.

Yes, The broadcasters and the dumb FCC are the one's made the mess by radio spectrum TV repacking, allowing DRM and unneeded censorship making FTA OTA less attractive to the U.S. TV viewers, so they shot themselves in the foot!🙄😛

The future of free TV is dead
I agree with that. I think the networks are all about the paid subscribers rather than the ad revenue. I wouldn't be surprised if the primetime shows end up behind a paywall, and they toss us a bone every once in a while with older seasons of current shows to get people to pay to see the latest.

With out a doubt....The own all the content, control it, then can make any rules who the want to share it with or not.............Its a great gig, as soon as they can kill any and all of their competition!
In the end you will have a handful controlling all content.

The thing that makes me think that is the drm bs and astc 3.0 needs an internet connection. I also think the mega companies are behind it out of pure greed.

So, we have the obvious. Use of DRM and network station pay tv would only be a Killer to ota tv. Ind pay tv would be a loser as well just look at the defunct Evoca pay tv and I believe it was a nonprofit operation. Sadly, the religious rike got the FCC to over censer ota tv and made it not worth watching most movies and some programs.

But if done right Nextgen may not have to be a big loss because there are few positives with the new system over the present system. One big plus would be the ability to provide two different versions of the same movies and programs on two different channels. One censored(G-PG) and one not R-NR). Let us utilize the parental controls on the tvs and dvrs that it was truly meant to be used for.

Even though nexgen should provide better signal reception a lot of tv stations will need to install more translators to add to their coverage area to gain more viewers. Consumers want an all in one device and the need to add nexgen tuners/dvr to streaming devices would be a plus. I do not think getting a new nexgen tv is at the top of most people list and they would settle for a low cost nexgen tuner box to connect to their present tv. So, the Higher res picture, DNR and better sound would only be a plus if the tv stations provided it and more people have nexgen tvs.

Mobile tv would not be a big thing and the interactivity part would be like the internet with both the good, bad, and ugly.
