Microsoft cuts price of Surface Pro by $100 for "limited time"

Still pleased with mine. I don't see how a full laptop would have been better. That is exactly what I wanted to get away from.

But, the Surface Pro with keypad does not have the user ease that the ipad has. I bought it for the stuff that I can't do with an ipad. It does everything and more than my laptop. Plus, it is treated like a tablet at airports, not the scrutiny they do with a laptop. It all depends on what you need the Surface Pro for. Might be that a Macbook air is more suited.

Scott- which laptop did you get with touch screen?

Even at 80% off still a rip off for a winblows tablet with the lowest amount of apps available.

???

They are talking about the Surface Pro which is essentially just another Windows/intel box in tablet form. So apps shouldn't be an issue at all.

When you buy a tablet that is advertised at 32 GB yet you have less then 11 GB usable...

When you buy a tablet and the battery lasts around 3 hours

When you buy a tablet and it only has 1 USB port...

When you buy a tablet like that you bought yourself a Microsoft Surface Pro.

But I knew the Surface Pro has an operating system that takes storage space just like a laptop. So I bought one with more storage capacity than I'll probably ever need even with Vegas Pro, sound forge, Photoshop and a bunch of other software loaded. I have a total of 2X 128Gb of storage. Longest battery burn time I did was watch a blu ray 2 hour movie on the external drive plugged into the Surface Pro for power. The entire drive works with just one USB cable. My Dell laptop wouldn't go more than 90 minutes on a battery and then require a swap to finish a 2 hour movie.

lparsons is correct. I don't use APPS. Those are for the RT version. This is just a laptop with full Windows8 Pro OS on a tablet form factor. You wouldn't buy a laptop with only 32Gb of storage, why buy a Surface Pro with such a low amount of storage? I agree it is a mistake for MS to even sell the Pro at 32Gb. Heck all my ipads are 64Gb storage. I wish my Thunderbolt phone was 64Gb capable. I'm struggling with only 32Gb.

Yeah, I recall. While its still no excuse that MS offered that low amount of ram, Eva should know it's OK to buy you a new suit, but she shouldn't buy technology as a gift for a tech geek. Nobody in my family buys me tech stuff. Likewise, I never buy my wife a new purse, a dress, Jewelry is OK, or in the tech side of things, any form of insurance except car insurance. And then she is looking over my shoulder with that. Eva is a good negotiator, though so you pick it out and let her drive the price down. :)
Jewelry, but not watches. Remember how she disappeared to pick out her watch that day in St. Thomas?

I've never understood why they offered the Pro version with that low storage, just doesn't make sense. I have a MacBook Pro that has 128Gb SSD and have about 40Gb left after all my stuff is on, minus my iTunes library which is stored on a networked drive. If I was doing lots of video and/or audio, I'd be hard pressed for storage.

The illusion of choice. Some people want the full powered experience but don't actually need the storage. I have an Acer W700. It's basically a 64gb Surface Pro / Macbook Air specs-wise, but slightly larger and much better battery life. I could have probably gotten by with an RT tablet but didn't want my options confined to whatever ARM can run, which seems to be barely the OS. As a result I've played Civ V on it and stuff on occasion :)

As an owner of a Note 2, the casual tablet usage has moved to my phone more than my W8 tablet though, I get that out when I want a better browsing experience, typically at a friend's house while we're gaming or something, or to stream a UFC PPV or something.

Was away this past weekend and had the Surface Pro with me. One of my video cameras developed a corrupted file structure and I was able to download some file diagnostic tools and perform the repair to the camera's internal storage from the hotel room saving all the video from the days shoot. This is a task that would have been impossible to perform on an ipad or maybe even the Surface RT. In a couple hours I was back in business for the next day's shooting. This is exactly why I am pleased to have the Surface Pro with me on these trips and not have to deal with a laptop TSA harassment at airport security. In other words, I can keep the Surface Pro packaged up in my carry-on. Laptops have to be taken out and put in a separate tray.

I've had some surprising success with the Surface Pro in running Sony Vegas Pro v12 in 3D mode. There are a few display issues with the fonts but I believe this may be due to the desktop display mode and I am working on that issue. But the performance appears to be bug free and no crashes. I even tested the 3D camcorder USB 3D file transport and conversion of the 3D MVC files. The 3D video clips transfer and play flawlessly from the timeline. I've tested from the microSD card and the internal memory. Because the Surface Pro display is NOT 3D, in order to view the video in 3D mode Vegas preview screen is set for anaglyph red/cyan and you have to wear red cyan glasses to view.

This is amazing performance considering Vegas Pro is about the most robust software I use and will tax the hardware the most. I never expected it to play 3D as smoothly as it does complete with sound and no hiccups or system crashes. Of course, the testing I've done so far has been very basic editing, as the operations get more complex, at some point the compute power will not keep up, but for doing the basics it is more than I expected.
