I got a Surface when it first came out to help me learn how to use their new touch system . Ok, with lots of potential, but lacking in apps and does not fully support some of the web sites I use a lot (NOAA). Was thinking about getting the Pro which supports everything but hear it is a battery hog. Now I hear rumors that Intel has a new processor coming out later this year to address that problem. I can understand why they jumped into the market when they did but am guessing it is going to take them at least another year before they have a machine on the market that deserves to be a market leader. When they get it all going, it is going to be nice (the new browser is top notch, and the new search feature is neat). I have both touch desktop and surface devices and slowly am relearning how to effectively use the new system (very powerful and a long term winner). But, anyone that says it is a snap to switch is crazy. I'm guessing lots of users will have to die before the new system becomes a popular standard.I would not flatter it with "Good Quarter" Rather I would say "Not bad" Microsoft seems to be an investor's friend. I picked up a couple hundred shares (after they announced Surface) for $27.10 and it has meandered around that number for a couple months now. Disappointing that nothing seems to drive MSFT up or down since it's previous disappointing qtr last year wich drove it down for me to buy in; and, the more disappointment that MSFT failed horribly in the launch of Surface RT. The distribution is horribly restricted by the company. As a share holder looking for a gain, this is very disappointing and I would vote to fire Ballmer.
I listened to the earnings call live and was rather bored with the entire report that lacked any enthusiasm or hope for a better outlook next quarter. They simply reminded us that Windows 8 sales continue as expected and Surface Pro will soon be released. In software, New Office will be released to give Office users a new look to the product. They didn't say what that look will be nor what benefit it will be to upgrade. Is it just cosmetic? The callers asking questions were equally boring a Reply With Quotend appeared to be half asleep. The only good news in this earnings call is they did not announce a disaster. With that, I guess I should be happy as I wait for a small pop to sell out.

Given that Apple's quarterly profit was 154% higher, I'm not sure it is something to crow about.
I was looking at a OS market share pie chart from last month and it placed Windows 8 share at about 1/3 that of Vista. Windows 8 has not been great and Office 13 is a decided wait-and-see if they've done anything more than provide a platform for new training opportunities.

If their big splash product fails to generate much interest, there isn't much future to look forward to. Office 2013 (Office on the Cloud) doesn't look the be the savior product in terms of large-scale government or enterprise adoption so what are they left with? A decidedly long-in-the-tooth Xbox? A failure of Blackberry could be a sucking chest would for the ever-miserable Exchange Server and the associated Windows Server 2012 product that few are using yet.To much focus on the short term and not enough on the overall strength and future.
