If you have an HD stb such as the Openbox s9, do you have to connect it to an HD tv to watch HD channels, or can it convert the HD signals to SD if connected to a standard tv?

The Openbox will convert HD to SD. You have to set it to SD though, i.e., it won't output HD on the digital output and SD on the analog output simultaneously like, for example, a Dish receiver will. Also, just in case you have a really old TV, it doesn't have an RF output.
I was thinking that I could scan all the availabel HD channels with the Openbox, and watch it on a standard tv, since I don't have one yet.
I use an old Terk RF MODULATOR 34, that I had on my first DVB receiver that only had audio and video jacks on it. Still works well to RF to coax to other rooms and AC-3 sound on my old TV's.
Once you've seen HD programming on a big screen (mine's 42"), you won't go back.

I originally had a HD receiver (Coolsat 8000) on my old 32" SDTV and it worked. But get a HD TV...well worth it for those HD feeds

I noticed that all the HD stb's are 1080i ( scans every other line ), and most HD tv's are 1080p ( scans every line )....is this noticeable when watching tv on the stb as opposed to, say OTA HD. I know I can definately see the difference from 780p to 1080p when comparing tv's.
The highest resolution the shows are broadcast in 1080i.
But when you make a plasma or LCD TV, you gotta build 1080 scan lines into it.
Basically, the TV upconverts the 1080i to 1080p internally.
Same as it does for lower resolution signals.
HD OTA TV (ATSC) maxes out at 1080i, too. CBS for instance.
Some crummy stations, and one major network only transmit 720p.
A few locals around here, run multiple different 480p or 480i, but they're rare.

ABC, Fox and (if its a main station) My Network all run 720p
CBS & NBC are 1080i
we've got some like that here in Minneapolis. Both low powered
16 is EWTN...16-1 through 5
25 is TBN mux..25-1 through 25-5
