low cpu use codecs for dvb dream?

I've been having glitcy problems with dvb dream stopping recording after a certain amount of space is recroded (roughly 1.5 gigs) and similar memory type problems that lock it up on occassion. What's audio/video codec combo will use the least amount of cpu and ram but still give ok results? I've been using elecard/intervideo, but am thinking others may be better since my computer's not the fastest in the world.

What OS do you have, and what kind of filesystem are you recording on, NTFS, FAT? What are the specs of the machine?

Do you defragment? Did you eliminate all unneeded startup programs and services?

I've got windows xp sp2, 1.50 ghz, 512 MB ram, NTFS on both C: and F:

C: is main os system. F: is second internal hard drive. F: is mainly just used to save recordings and stuff to. F: has 132 GB, of which 107 are free at the moment. I did shut down everything that I could from startup. With everything closed except internet explorer, I'm running 2-10% cpu usage most times... and 337 or so mb PF Usage. Open up dvb world as only other app, and it climbs to close to 100 percent on cpu and 418 mb pf usage, but quickly goes back to 50-60 percent cpu usage, and stays right around 418 mb pf usage... recording jumps that up to nearly 100 percent cpu usage and 419 or more mb pf usage, and nearly is essentially locking up entire darn computer right now... everything is freezing up and won't respond for almost a minute or so... shutting down dvb dream drops me back to 2-10 percent cpu usage and 336 mb pf usage... I'm going to try a defrag. Maybe that's the problem since I've been recording gigabytes and gigabytes of vide and then deleting later...

Another thing to look at is your video card. I have had much better luck with NVidia based cards ( currently using an old GForce3 Ti200 w/128Mb ram) instead
of ATI cards. Also, I had similar problems to what you are experiencing when I was running my Twinhan on an older P4 1.7Ghz system. Moved it to my current system, P4 3.0Ghz and along with 1Gig of ram and the above mentioned card, I don't experience problems. Also using NVidia's Pure Video Codec. It realy helps, especially if you are attempting to grab HD broadcasts.

On my Skylink-1, typically I see about 30-40% cpu rate on 1920x1024, 4:2:0 material, using the Nvidea pureVideo codec with an ATI Radeon x1050 board. Occasionally, the cpu rate peaks at about 60%, then returns to the lower range. Maybe someday, I'll know how to better optimize this system, but at least it works. I suspect I need a lot more horsepower for 4:2:2 video.

After some heavy work, I got the PBS HD channel on AMC3, nicely, using the Nvidea PureVideo Video codec and an audio codec named "Moonlight" .
System cpu runs from 45%-65%, mostly at the low end. No recording going on, if I do that, I'll do it externally, I think.

System is
Athlon XP 2800+
1.5GB ram
250 MB boot drive ( 7200 rpm ATA)
250 MB data drive ( 7200 rpm SATA ) .

I tried the nvidia codec that came with the dvb world's install cd thingy... (bought if off of ebay so the guy had a burned itty bitty cd that he sent it with)... not sure if that's the codec you all are talking about. It did have a 45% cpu usage after a few seconds of 100% cpu usage when it first started up... but for some dumb reason it was all fine for a while and then eventually the screen froze sort of like when you hit pause on an fta receiver... not sure what caused that.... tested some recording - it seemed to do ok until that freeze or whatever and then it just stopped adding info to the recording it was trying to make.... think I need a better computer. I don't really want to buy a new pc for another year or two til prices drop on high end stuff with blue ray, pci express, and massive terrabyte hard drives, etc.

For a while I ran my setup on a P4 1.7Ghz system w/512Megs ram (as I mentioned in my previous post) and even with the NVidia Pure Video codec with my Gforce3 Ti200, it still has problems on HD. Moving to the faster system, P4 3.0Ghz and more ram (1gig) did solve that problem for me. CPU usage dropped quite a lot. I imagine with a much newer video card I could do even better. But, the old Gforce3 seems to work pretty good..........so far.
I don't blame you on the prices for a new system. I used to try to keep up to date and build a new system regularly............until I got to looking at how much money I was spending. Now, I a couple of generations or so behind. I'm waiting on a couple of things to drop into my price range(cheap). Like you, I want faster and better. And I would really like to see a combo HD-DVD/BlueRay rewritable pc drive for less than $300.00. But, I'm not holding my breath for that one to happen anytime soon!!

Celeron 352D with 384 Meg Ram, and onboard video (128 MB ram) I get around 9-13 % CPU
