I am going to try to sneak a motor home one of these days..... I have 3 spots picked out. One I am sure there is no problem, but it would be real visible, so i would rather not put it there. So, I have the top of my shed where the 80cm is now, or on the side of a hill behind/next to my house. I have attached some pics of the view these locations have. The pics that are on the hill, Ihave taken at what would be the level the dish would be mounted at. I THINK it would clear the roof and the side of my house, as my house is abou 10-12' above the ground, and the hill and the pole for the dish would make the dish about 8' or so off the ground. Can anyone tell by the pics if either of these spots look like I would have a god view of the sky? For reference, the Primestar dish that is in the orange bucket on my patio is pointed at G10, as is the 80cm Fortec dish that is on the shed roof. Thanks for any help!

Shed...

shed

but how close is that tree branches to the shed?

looks like you have a LOS on there of 129 down to about 79...probably more but those branches on the far right mught hinder it

The branches on the left are about 10-15 feet away, and the tree on the right (129 side) is prolly 60 plus feet away.

not worried about the tree on right. Current dish proves you can get to 129...you should be fine going east to 74 & 72 at the existing spot where the 80cm is :)

You might already have everything you need to do a proper site survey
  • compass with headings marked off in degrees
  • inclinometer (or a school supply type protractor, plus a string and a washer)
  • short length of pipe
  • camera tripod (not absolutely necessary, but recommended)

Get a list of the satellites theoretically visible from your site and their apparent positions in the sky.

Look up the magnetic deviation from true north at your location.

Tape the pipe onto the head of the tripod. Use the inclinometer or protractor to set the pipe's angle of elevation, use the compass to set the pipe's azimuth (factoring in the mag. dev.)

Look through the pipe. If you can see blue sky your dish will see the satellite from that spot.

Thanks for all the input! I "found" a spot that has the view I want, is ground level, and does not look bad. See my weekend project post if you want to be bored :)
