I'm not sure where to post this. I have a question. For instance Regis And Kelly and Oprah in my local city Providence it doesn't show them in HD but in Boston the shows are in HD. Does each station have to pay more for each show that broadcast in HD?? Just wondering.

Thanks.

WJAR does show Regis and Kelly in HD, and Dish according to their site carries WJAR in HD. Not sure why you are not seeing it in HD.

Some stations have the equipment to broadcast programs in HD, some don't. For example in my DMA (Greenville/Spartanburg, SC), syndicated programs like Ellen Degeneres, Oprah, LIVE with Regis and Kelly, Entertainment Tonight, The Doctors are shown in HD on our NBC station, Divorce Court, Nate Berkus are shown in HD on our FOX station. On our CBS station, Dr. Phil in HD. On CW, Judge Karen's Court and America's Court shown in HD. And on our ABC station, Dr. Oz, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy! are in HD. Since the ABC/MNT and CBS/CW stations broadcast local news in HD while NBC and FOX affiliate that I have broadcast local news in 16x9 SD. That's better than nothing.

For those who don't broadcast syndicated HD shows in HD for example in Charleston, South Carolina's NBC affiliate WCBD-TV doesn't broadcast Divorce Court, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy in HD. That means it's in SD with black side bars.

for syndicated shows yes
the national programming...no

Got the same thing here in Minneapolis. There is a CBS about 65 miles down the road in Mankato and the only thing they show in HD is the national stuff like Price is Right, Y&R, Primetime and sports. The rest is black bar hell which includes the 3 shows that "oh my god I must watch" which are Ellen, Dr "I make s**t up as I go" Phil and O-"I wish you'd just shut up and its funny your cable network is flopping"-Prah. CBS in Mpls carries all of them in HD.
The Fox station in Mankato (subchannel on CBS) the only thing in HD is network programming. And thats in 480i 16x9 widescreen

WJAR 10 in Providence doesn't show Regis and Kelly in HD has the black bars but WHDH 7 in Boston has it in HD. And same with Oprah black bars on 10 but WCVB 5 in Boston has it in HD.

Then they (Providence) dont pay the syndicated rights for HD.

And yes there are shows that may show in the guide as HD but its always best to check

My market's the same way. (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) Only the network programming is in HD although our ABC affiliate (WNEP) just converted their newscasts to HD.

Here in CT WFSB shows Craig Ferguson in sd! They claim it's because they rerun ET at 12:30 in hd and don't have the equipment to do both. Lame!

Up in Bismarck, N.D., very little syndicated programming, especially on the FOX affiliate was in HD.
