My Direct TV dish and receiver are set up to receive local channels. I thought it would be cool to take the system on a camping trip (more than 400 miles away) to keep up with news in my hometown. However, once the system was set up, the locals did not come in. All the other channels did, but not the locals. I get a "searching for signal" message on the local channels.

Does Direct TV have some type of regional coding, or am I missing something simple? Maybe what I'm trying to do is impossible.

Any thoughts?!?

Wrong forum.

Search for "Spot Beams" for your answer.

:welcome

The problem with Directv and locals is that almost all markets are on spotbeams. So if you take your receiver away from your home market and you are out of spotbeam range, you can not see your locals. There are a few ways of getting locals on the road but you would need to be in New York DMA, have an RV license, or get exceptions so you can get New York locals. That wouldnt get your normal market locals only New York versions.

What ???
This IS the Directv forum and he's talking about D* and spotbeams.

Rwy3rd,
Your in the right place,
Like Brewer said, it's a spotbeam issue, once you travel outside of the spotbeam for your local, you'll lose them.
How about trying a pair of rabbit ears when your camping, that way you would at least have the local network stations and can keep up on the area stuff.

btw, :welcome to the site !!!
