Greetings-
I was watching the TV Show with the best hair, Ancient Aliens on the History channel or H2, and I saw a commercial for Honda that said "Attention Minnesota" (or something like that). This is the first time I have seen local ads on a National channel on DirecTv. Anyone else seeing this? How are they doing this? I have an idea how local cable companies do this but not sure how DirecTv does it.

Then cue it up and insert it just like the cable company does at their head end but it is happening on my local DVR. That is what I thought and I am not sure how I feel about this.
I guess you don't understand satellite and CONUS

Dish and Direct both said they were going to start doing this as a business model back just before last prez elections. You will see it more in the coming year as well, with political ads that will be oriented around what you watch regularly and your area.

I have seen local ads on national channels since I moved here and got Boston locals. It's not new at all, just probably new to the MN market you're in.

so are the ad's sent on the spot beams and just saved to the DVR, then when the local spot opens up it just throws in whatever the local ad(s) is/are?

I just want to throw in this is not in any way new, DISH has been doing this for a quite sometime. In the end it doesn't matter how you feel about it unless you want no pay TV service in your house. There are far more local commercials on the national networks on cable, but in the end I can skip those just as easy as skipping any others if I choose to.

doesn't need to be on a spotbeam..the software is smart enough to know what to record based on zipcodes

I'm a steady voter for a particular political party, but I actually would like to see this to see what the candidates have to say, but since I'm "moved" and not just "moved" but "moved" to a neighboring state, I won't see any of my true local political ads. That being said, I have yet to see any local commercials on my Genie and its client for my national channels.

there are no feelings involved, they are not targeting you, but rather your local market. Hey, this could be a plus since they can announce local stuff that matters only to your market, like a concert, local event, etc.

And the LACK of local commercials was something about DBS that I LOVED. I believe the tech is that the local ads are pre-loaded onto the HDD and then are cued to playback while you watch--either live or playback of DVR recording--your content. They are a pain on Dish and the locals ads are almost always in SD. I don't like them. And I don't like the EBS via DBS, either, and yet the broadcasters crow about how they are the ONLY ones providng EBS as an argument for their existance.

I'm kinda glad ....
That DR Trimmer Ad gets old after you hear it 5-6 times an hour.
