I don't post anti-Blu stuff in the BD forum. When I post here I just let you guys know of deals.

For those of you with Fry's Electronics, the Lite-On BD-ROM drive (internal SATA) is $179.99. My Lite-On DVD writer lasted a few years before crapping out. Their stuff isn't rock solid. However, $179 is the price of a Xbox 360 add-on.

For those of you without a B&M Fry's, you can order one at Outpost.com.

Nice. I wonder if sony making the smaller lasers soon is going to get the price down on more drives and players.

I jumped onto the CDR and DVDR bandwagon and paid well over $500 for my first burners, not doing it this time.

Ever since usb drives, I really have no interest.

My work laptop is a Toshiba, so no luck there on a bd drive for travel :).

I wonder if they'll make an external BDROM?

I'm sure with a little work, you could put that BD-ROM into an enclosure.

I don't think they've quite reduced it to the cheapness they were talking about, yet. My first DVD-ROM was like $50. Prices on neither side have come down enough. I don't see prices coming down too much below $50 for Blu-Ray due to royalties.

Blu-Ray: Sony Reduces Blu-ray Lasers' Size and Cost

Sony Reduces Blu-ray Lasers' Size and Cost

With Blu-ray destroying the competition, the availability of cheaper units is going to be a big part in the future success of the format. That is why Sony's recent success in shrinking the basic Blu-ray reader/writer module is a turn for the better. The new modules will pave the way for thinner drive bays and cheaper players.

The units are only 3mm thick, and Sony is confident that the smaller size will allow Blu-ray functionality to become mainstream in standard 9.5mm laptop drives. Sony are further hoping that this move towards greater ubiquity is secured by the end of this year.

The cost effectiveness will be due to a simpler manufacturing process, and the 3mm modules will also be able to read dual layered BDs with organic dye in the recording layers. Such discs can be produced from traditional DVD production lines, again driving down the costs. Sure, this may all sound like great news, but do you not recall the movies, people? The hardships that were faced by a tiny Thomas Brown still bring a tear to my eye.

Ill have to look into it as they come down. I would not use it enough now to spend the $200.

My game plan is no more tech purchases, that way when I bring up the 1080p purchase around labor day, the wife wont castrate me :)

This probably means there will be a Sony drive out soon.
Sony's latest CD burners and early DVD burners were rebadged Lite-On's - you could firmware flash one into another.

Diogen.
