For months I tried to figure out what to do when I was watching letterboxed movies on IFC and TCM. As you know letter boxed movies look strange when in stretch mode. They don't fill the screen top & bottom and actors look 5 feet wide. Well, today I found a thread that allows you to handle letter box programs and continue to watch HD and pillar box without constantly changing the setup for VOOM. There is a thread called "SET IN NATIVE RESOLUTION WITHOUT SD STRETCH" which explains step by step how to accomplish this task. It is great. I tried it and it works. I can be watching EQUATOR in HD and then flip to IFC and watch a letterbox in full screen with no distortion. Then go to news channel and change to pillar box or stretch with my TV remote controls. Check it out. Gives you more flexibility with the various formats and the SD channels look a lot clearer when seen in 480 and not bumped up to 1080.Thanks to JAHBIG.

Just so you don't have to hunt it down:

To SET 1080i in NATIVE RESOLUTION WITHOUT the SD Stretch...

1. Enter system settings from the Setting Menu.
2. Enter INSTALLER MENU
3. Enter INSTALLATION WIZARD
4. Enter SET OUTPUT RESOLUTION
5. Set output to 1080i; Press OK. The next screen Press OK again. You must be at the screen that allows you to change the STB resolution using the colored buttons.
6. Open door housing red button and press until the four line lights ALL
illuminate indicating native resolution. Notice as you press the
red button, the bottom left lettering remain at 1080i through each TV screen resolution change. Press OK to lock in 1080i. BACK out of all menus or press WATCH after exiting INSTALLER'S MENU.

Following these steps will lock in 1080i in NATIVE RESOLUTION for HD channels and allows the STB to operate on SD channels with much better clarity WITHOUT the STRETCH. Also repeat steps after rebooting.

How is this different than just setting the STB to native resolution by pressing the red button until all the lights light up?

I haven't tried it in a while, but last time I set it that way the surf bar had really bad PQ. I know this will sound strange but I like to have good PQ on my surf bar.

Voom needs to program one of the colored buttons to switch modes while watching TV like the Dish 6000 does. Having to go through all these gyrations just to lose it on a reboot is absurd!
