Why you ask simply because 622 only outputs 1080i Knowing that 1080p is here now and will be bigger this year with more HDTV set, dvd, playstation3 and that MPEG4 with 1080p is the highest of high-definition signal formats with 1080X1920 It would only mean that 622 or even the 211 within year or two just like 811,942,921 would need to be replaced. Bottom line is DirectTv went the right way in saying they will be moving to a lease only program. Dish should follow suite.

Who do you think will broadcast anything in 1080p?
Since most of the broadcasters have recently switched to 1080i or 720p do you see a change to 1080p anytime soon?

A lot of companies believe 1080p is the next big thing in HDTV,There are no 1080p signal sources yet—at least, none available to consumers

As the article states, 1080p here is the DISPLAY, not the signal. 1080p displays convert the 1080i into 1080p for display. This can usually be an improvement in the picture. But it will not be as good as a 1080 60p signal would produce. However, we will be unlikely to see any broadcast of 1080 60p, outside of Blu-ray or (maybe) HD-DVD, for decades. The cameras, editing, production, distribution and transmission facilities today cannot handle it. New standards and equipment would be needed. The ATSC definitions would have to be expanded to include the standard, and there is no way you could fit the 1080 60p signal in 6 MHz, with acceptable PQ, under today's ATSC. It would require MPEG-4 OTA, or a more advanced system.

You cannot simply discuss resolution without also considering frame rate.

No one is likely to try to feed their PS3 via a VIP622.

And, as has been posted many times in these forums, DISH is in fact moving toward making purchase difficult, (expensive) and a de facto lease only system.

I think its a bit overstating that the 622 will be useless, if they are already taking on a boatload of bandwidth with HD LiLs would would they even consider transmitting in 1080p? Don't see it happening.

One thing that people wished for that will never happen IMO is a dual OTA tuner. Considering E* and D* are adding HD LILs it would be a waste of money to add a second OTA tuner.

The reason to lease not buy 622 1- $649.00 miunus $100 trade in that some Retailers give for your 921,942 by the way most don't offer $100 credit anymore. 2- E*will lease 622 to you if you own 921,942 for $99($200 rebate) not bad but your leasing plus you already fork out Major Money for that MPEG2 receiver. Did we know MPEG4 receiver would be out within two years MPEG2

1080p is the 18th ATSC standard already. There are 3 1080i/p standards, 3 720p standards, 9 480p standards, and 3 480i standards defined by ATSC. There is no 1280x1080 standard, BTW.

* 720p - 1280x720 progressive
* 1080i - 1920x1080 interlaced
* 1080p - 1920x1080 progressive

More Accurate - Listing the resolution and frame rate:

* 480i - The picture is 704x480 - (60/2 interlaced frames per second)
= 30 complete frames per second.

* 480p - The picture is 704x480 - 60 complete frames per second.

* 720p - The picture is 1280x720 - 60 complete frames per second.

* 1080i - The picture is 1920x1080 - (60/2 interlaced frames per second)
= 30 complete frames per second.

* 1080p - The picture is 1920x1080 - 60 complete frames per second.

Don't forget the 24 & 30 frame rates:

ATSC DTV Formats (18)
Vert-lines....Pixels........Aspect Ratio........Picture Rate
...1080........1920..............16:9..........60I...30P...24P
....720........1280..............16:9..........60P...30P...24P
....480.........704..........16:9 & 4:3.......60P...60I...30P...24P
....480.........640...............4:3...........60P...60I...30P...24P

Previously we had channels 2-83
In 2004 we had channels 2-69
After conversion, we will have channels 2-51

Oh Brother! You are worried about 1080p when we can't even get Hi Def, all we get is HD Lite! You think that is going to change in the near future???

I think in a year or two Dish will broadcast in 1080p, but only on a very limited basis. For example, I would expect them to try to get us to pay $10+ for 1080p HD PPV movies that they would feed from Blu-Ray DVDs. Someone mentioned to Scott at CES that they were looking into 1080p. All this is just my guess.

And we have a winner! I think you will only see 1080p source material in two places: either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and PPV (VOD). NAB fought long and hard to stay away from digital and HD - that's why the law doesn't require HD broadcasting, only digital broadcasting. There is no way in hell they will spend extra time and money to get to 1080p. On the other hand, the motion picture industry will gladly make the move to 1080p. Between them and NAB, it's a match made in heaven.

That way they can force us to take their over-compressed HD LIL vs much-less-compressed HD OTA. :(

Keep in mind that when and if Dish starts sending anything in 1080p all it should require is a software upgrade to the box. This is really different from say an upgrade to MPEG 4, as the MPEG 4 decoders are hardware.

Oh and satwasp, there is still lots of real HD on Dish. Only some of it is being sent in "HD-Lite"

Granted there are no 1080p broadcasting yet—at least, none available to consumers, BrianMis Wouldn't like your Samsung HL-R6178W 61 1080p DLP to be used with its full viewing 1920x1080 resolution to watch ESPN check out this article from 1 year ago http://www.cedmagazine.com/article/CA422050.html . If you want 1080p Today you might want to look at DVDO Video Scaler/Processors -iScan VP30 that can output to 1080p. Hopefully your right and its just a software upgrade to the box if E* put in the right Video Processors Chip in the MPEG4 Receiver( Knowing E* they didn't)

Yea I would like it, but I can wait for 1080p. I bought the TV because in my opinion it had the best picture of all the TV's I looked at. The truth is that it does a really good job of upconverting 1080i and it's ready for the future.

Take a look at the 811's setup menus, you can change the resolution the box outputs at. That's why I think it will only require a software upgrade, although I could be wrong.

How much should I worry about overheating?
