Two years ago, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. decided to end their eight year partnership, with the former creating a new deal with the folks over at Universal Pictures. This deal has worked out quite well for Legendary, as they wound up with a nice kickback from the massive success of Jurassic World, but now it looks like they may be bringing one of their most high-profile upcoming titles - Kong: Skull Island - back to WB. Why? If new reports are to be believed, it's because they're interested in the idea of a potential crossover with Godzilla.Deadline has the scoop on this development, and even has what looks to be a timetable for the combination of the franchises. According to the trade's sources, Legendary is still planning on having Godzilla 2 focus on the giant lizard from Japan, but that the movie that follows that one will see the King of the Monsters go toe-to-toe with the world's biggest ape. One would assume that this crossover project doesn't happen unless Kong: Skull Island is successful at the box office, but the report seems to suggest that Legendary is very gung-ho on this idea.Right now, Universal's position in all of this isn;t known, but Deadline makes it very clear why Legendary Pictures is interested in the Kong: Skull Island move. It's true that King Kong is currently in the public domain, but Legendary believes that having the potential crossover franchises under one roof will make waters easier to navigate as the projects make their way through development. It's hard to question the logic there.As things stand, Kong: Skull Island is a bit of a question mark. The project is set to be helmed by Kings of Summer's Jordan Vogt Roberts, and it was recently revealed that Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly has been brought on to work on the script by Max Borenstein. As the movie has made its way through production, on pace to come out in 2017, there have been a few casting shakeups, with Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons signing on and then deciding to drop out. That being said, the film has put together one hell of an ensemble that includes Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Toby Kebbell, and possibly Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Wilkinson and John C. Reilly. Because the feature is set in the 1970s, however, it's unclear if any of these actors would actually get to be in a Kong/Godzilla crossover film.

Why do they have to remake classic? Thse films are not about special effects----OK they are not about GOOD special effects. they are about kitsch and it would be very hard to top the original for that.

A thunderous roar echoed through the internet this week when it was announced that Legendary Entertainment’s upcoming production ‘Kong: Skull Island’ is moving house from Universal to Warner Bros - with a view to setting up a new ‘King Kong Vs Godzilla’ movie.Whilst the prospect of the two most iconic giant monsters in film history doing battle once again was more than enough to leave fans everywhere salivating, it seems this may only be the tip of the iceberg for Warners’ plans with their giant monster properties.A new report at Bloody Disgusting claims the stage is being set for a massive multi-franchise monster universe which, on top of King Kong and Godzilla, will also include the monsters-versus-robots future world of ‘Pacific Rim.’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, over the course of discussions about such a massive crossover potentially happening, one big point was repeatedly brought up that could prove to be an insurmountable obstacle. As huge as the greatest of the great apes is, the King of the Monsters is much, much bigger.While King Kong is big enough to grab Fay Wray (or Naomi Watts depending on which version you’re talking about) and scale the Empire State Building, swatting at pesky airplanes and helicopters along the way, Godzilla is the same height as the skyscrapers. Godzilla would basically just step on King Kong, light him on fire with his atomic breath for good measure, and call it an early night.The prevailing logic is that, in order to make this clash feasible—or for the two to potentially become allies against some greater enemy—there will have to be some kind of alteration in the respective size of the iconic beasts. However, as difficult as this may seem, a source close to Legendary says that they are confident that they can come up with a way to even the playing field a bit, and perhaps even explain how the two can become the best of friends.All of this started earlier in the week when Universal let Legendary Pictures, with whom they have a partnership deal in place, take their upcoming Kong: Skull Island over to the folks at Warner Bros. Legendary had a similar eight-year relationship with WB that recently came to an end—the two co-produced Gareth Edwards' 2014 Godzilla before that union dissolved. These reports indicated that the move to take Skull Island over to WB is predicated on Legendary’s interest in crossing the two franchises over in the near future.Godzilla 2 is still in the works, but the tentative plan appears to be that after that happens, King Gong and Godzilla will somehow meet up on movie screens world wide. Again, this is all contingent on if they can figure out how to contend with the size disparity. As it stands, the latest Godzilla is roughly 350 feet tall (the original incarnation is apparently only 164 feet), while King Kong is generally considered to be around 50 feet tall—then again, we haven’t seen the Skull Island version yet, so perhaps he’s a bit larger than the traditional Kong.

Warner Bros. and Legendary are teaming up on a 2020 movie Godzilla vs. Kong, representing the official unification of the two monster franchises.The companies jointly announced Wednesday that the basis for the film would be an “ecosystem” of giant super-species, both classic and new, as the Monarch organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film expands its mission in multiple releases.The first films in the partnership have already been announced: Kong: Skull Island, which opens on March 10, 2017, and Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018.The announcement noted that while Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the Godzilla films and the Kong origin film will be distributed via Warner Bros.
