Ka/KU filter

I have a question about the filter or down converted that comes with the irds to be used with the ka/ku. I was told by another tech that those shouldnt be used unless you are going to use the 6x8. Is this true or should they be used even if you dont use the 6x8?

I was also told they only last about 1 year. Is this true?
