as I checked out I noticed it said "must maintain current level programming or above for free HD". I signed up for DISH ultimate with the free 3 months of premiums.

If I cancel the premiums are they going to start charging me for HD?

No. That stipulation only applies to your base level programming package. You are free to add or drop premiums and sports packs as you wish. You can also upgrade your base package and later downgrade it as long as you don't go below your original base package. So if later on you decide you want to change to Premiere, you can. But if after a few months you realize there's nothing on the premium channels and want to drop back to Ultimate, you can with no regrets. But if you drop to Xtra or Choice, you will lose your free HD.
