Since I enjoy testing out the latest FTA satellite receivers on the market I decided to purchase the new Skybox / Openbox S12 receiver. At only $47 it will be worth it just for the fast blind scan alone and seeing just how well this new receiver performs.

Where did you order it from?

Yeah I seen that about the s16's somewhere.

I was just wondering where he got it for 47 bucks, everywhere I have seen there still 80-100.

I ordered it from Mixeshop.com for $47 plus $24 DSL shipping which was recommended as a reliable site to purchase it from. So, for under $80 you get a HD, DVR, DVB-S2 receiver that has a fast blind scan. It is about the same size and comes with an external power supply like the soon to be released MicroHD.

I'm hearing that the Skybox S12 supports DVB-S2 QPSK/8PSK/H8PSK/16APSK.

I've seen some good reviews on the S-12 on Euro message boards.
You can get DVB-S2 QPSK/8PSK/H8PSK/16APSK support from the Manhattan Rs-1933 already available here.
I do look forward to your review. It is a very low cost receiver with most of the stuff we want promised.

not trying to discourage you .. but one of the few sites i found with information on this mini receiver discontinued selling due to problems and having to replace them. i quote them saying " due to poor quality and high defect rate " I hope your falls into a better grade of equipment and you get to test it with positive results.

Sounds like the continuation of true Openbox "quality" :p

Still haven't update my Mercury II's
I have a Pansat 9200 and a Coolsat 8000 here that I've never messed with the firmware and they both still work nearly perfectly. ( I say nearly 'cause they do need a re-boot once in a very long while) :)

I've seen this, but I figured for under $80 I can't really go wrong.

Can you name one that worked perfectly without needing a firmware upgrade?

well lets see.....just off the top of my head

Pansat 1500.....still have original software in it
Coolsat 8000....once they added satellite software into it ( ;) ) it worked fine. Yes there were tons of updates but that was all for the eyepatch gang. The newest software if I remember just updated satellite names
Coolsat 5000....still on version 1.00 :)
GeosatPro 200....most of the updates are for channel updates for Glorystar or sat/transponder names

There are probably more. I guess if you want to keep buying receivers go ahead. Dont make me stop you. But since I was basically unemployed for 2 1/2 years (sans a couple months) recently I guess I learned to live with what I currently have FTA wise.
DVB and great blind scan....Coolsat 5000
DVB-S2 & HD and a good blind scan....Manhattan
